PenzaInform - The Penza champion knits ... dolls. Natalya Belugina: Sport is my life Gymnasts are allowed to attend sports camps

Wednesday 21 June 2017 15:53

Natalie Belugina: I always tell my children “If you do something, then do it well, in full force, or don’t do it at all”

When you are fully committed to your work, you will certainly achieve success. A striking example of this is Natalya Belugina - master of sports in rhythmic gymnastics, from 2004 to 2009 a member of the national team in Russia, coach, director of the festival Alina 2015, 2016 and 2017.

In an interview with Natalie's website, she talked about a 12-year career as a gymnast and a 7-year career as a coach and director.

- How did you get into sports, tell us about your first impression?

My mother gave me here, because my older sister went. She is 7 years older than me. Then I was small. Everyone thought that I would not be a very good gymnast. Because you had to be thin, long, pretty. And in the end, after 6 years, my legs grew, I stretched out - in the end it turned out that my data was better than my sister's. Then I trained for 19 years, until the injury happened.

- What happened?

My cartilage fell off in my foot and shattered into 3 parts. The joints are naturally soft, plus exercise, stretching for 8 hours a day. From such a load, he fell off. I had three operations, on the third they cleaned my joint and I had to finish my sports career six months before the World Championship. I became a coach, but I really didn't want to. Many people think that coaches are sitting on a chair and shouting "Come on!" But this is not at all the case. This is very hard work.

- Tell us about your family, your sister was an athlete ...

She has been on the national team for over 10 years. She is 3 times European Champion, 3 times World Champion, and Olympic champion in rhythmic gymnastics in Athens in lateral exercise... When Alina Kabaeva won, and Chashchina was second, her sister was first in the side exercise. Our whole family is athletic. Mom was engaged artistic gymnastics, and our dad is a volleyball player. Dad wanted to give us, of course, to volleyball, but mom quickly hurried up there and they sent us to rhythmic gymnastics... She was not wrong, because we both reached heights.

- Is there a downside to the medal in rhythmic gymnastics?

Of course! It was always necessary to keep the weight, not to eat, constant terrible fatigue. Your friends go to the movies, take a walk. And you understand that you cannot go there, because you simply do not have the strength. We were often told that we have no childhood, because we spend time in the hall from morning to evening. But I disagree with them. I have visited so many countries - for me it was clearly cooler than sitting on a bench, especially as a teenager

- We are shown in different films how sportswomen substitute each other. Cut each other's swimwear ...

We, too, only heard about this, when they hide disks, cut ribbons, break hoops. We have never had this. On the contrary, we always helped each other. At our competitions, the ceilings were often with bindings, and during the performance, objects often flew straight there. Sometimes athletes from other countries threw their items to us. That is, no, we have always helped each other. It's more honest. Why do dirty tricks and win. But that's not fair, not like real athletes.

- You’re training now. And how do you like this occupation?

I have been coaching since the age of 19. I wanted to prove to myself that I can coach. After all, this is not given to everyone. Maybe very good athlete, but as a trainer he cannot make methodical remarks. I got myself a group. They are still grateful to me, they call and write. It's nice that children understand this. There are athletes who win and forget about the coaches altogether. As if the coach was not there and they did everything themselves. So far I have not had such children. Two last years I no longer sit in the hall. I go to training camps, exercises. It's insanely hard work to coach. It's easier to be a gymnast: listened, did, left.

- Tell us about the performance ...

I really wanted to become an exercise director. I love it when everything is together, there is a composition. And I started to get it. In 2015, Alina Kabaeva's assistant called me and asked if I would like to compose a number for the Alina festival and I agreed. We have four directors there: Irina Zenovka, Ekaterina Sirotina, Elena Afanasyeva. These are great directors, they are very, very cool. They wanted to try someone new. The young man has different views anyway. All four directors travel across Russia. This year, not only across Russia, but also in Kyrgyzstan came.

- Where do you get inspiration for your productions?

I like music very much. Something comes to me 100% of the music. I listen to music all the time. They even ask me how I can constantly listen to music: in the hall there is music, on the way home with headphones, on the plane with headphones - I constantly imagine that I am putting on a number. And sometimes I go to compose, but I have nothing in my head. And then the music turns on and I already put in the number.

- Do you adhere to any principles in sports?

I always say to my children, “If you do something, then do it well, in full force, or do not do it at all”. One in a million becomes an Olympic champion. Everything should match, and natural data, and health, and height, and weight, and be at the right time at the right place... And when you finish your sports career, even if you did not become an Olympic champion, a world champion, but you knew that you did everything for this.

For the first time in history, a Penza athlete managed to become a prize-winner of the Russian rhythmic gymnastics championship. 18-year-old school student Olympic reserve Polina Khonina won two bronze medals - in exercises with clubs and ribbon. Before that, all the successes of the Penza rhythmic gymnastics were associated only with group exercises, where Natalya Lavrova and Olesya Belugina once shone.

True, one can recall Maria Titova, who in 2013, in the absence of her main rivals, won four gold medals in the personal championship of Russia, but Masha represented Zarechny.

We managed to meet Polina a few hours before the athlete's departure to Moscow, from where she went in transit to the Grand Prix of Ukraine. The gymnast admitted that she was not worried about political strife between the two countries and she was confident in the safety of the trip.

Polina, as far as I know, you are a native of Kirov. How did you end up in Penza?

When I turned 12, my mother and I realized that in hometown I have no chance to rise above a certain level. And we decided to go to Penza to the coaches - sisters Olga Stebeneva and Tatyana Vasilyeva, who raised the two-time Olympic champion Natalya Lavrova.

I went through the bride, having done a few special exercises, besides, the mentors have already seen me on all-Russian competitions... And so I ended up at the Olympic Reserve School.

When my mother returned to Kirov, it was not easy for me in the first six months of an independent life. But she didn't cry into the pillow, she coped with all the difficulties. Moreover, the same girls and boys who came from other cities lived in the hostel, this united us in many ways.

Now I'm in my second year, and I have to study for four years. After that I will enter the faculty physical education and sports. In the future I would like to become a coach. Already now I am doing quite well in drawing up plans for the preparation of athletes.

Rhythmic gymnastics, of course, is not as traumatic as sports, but there is still a risk?

I was lucky - no serious damage happened. Is that a minor back injury that makes itself felt from time to time. But, fortunately, it does not affect the performances.

You are an international master of sports, that is, you have participated in international tournaments ...

And I had occasion to go abroad to competitions. Usually we have one route there: hotel - stadium. Only in Israel we were given an excursion trip to Jerusalem, we also visited the Wailing Wall.

That time at the competition there was an unpleasant overlap when the organizers confused the sheets with the performances. I have already put on a swimsuit to perform with clubs, in front of me only two girls were waiting for their turn, and then they announce that I am performing with a ribbon.

At the very last moment, I managed to change clothes, but the other girl did not. She was given "zero" for her performance, although it was a mistake of the organizers!

Do you have talismans?

Toy hedgehog and teddy bear. I always take them to competitions, but I don't take them out of my backpack. Because talismans can jinx ...

Besides sports and study, what are your hobbies?

I read books and knit toys. Several girls from our hostel got carried away with this unusual knitting. And I just got sick with this kind of needlework. Now I am finishing the cat, it remains for him to sew his eyes ...

And what about your personal life?

I have not yet acquired a groom, so my heart is still free. I dream of meeting an intelligent, purposeful, kind and loving person who could become my life companion!

People come to sports in different ways. Some come on their own, having gone through a drawing circle, music lessons, a dance studio, others come for a company with friends. There is also a third choice. It can most likely be called a choice of fate. This happens with the children of circus performers, who practically live there from the first days of their lives, as well as with children, brothers and sisters of athletes. It is this option that takes place in the biography of the heroine of our today's story - Natalia Belugina, coach of the national team of the Penza region in rhythmic gymnastics.

SD: Natasha, tell me, where did you get your love for sports? Were your parents and sister a role model for you? And why did you choose rhythmic gymnastics?
Natalia: For me, absolutely everyone was an example to follow: my dad was a volleyball player, and my mother, who was engaged in gymnastics, and, of course, my sister Olesya. When I came to my sister for classes, I was delighted with the gymnasts, with what they were doing, with their demonstration performances... It was a real magic for me.
We can say that I absorbed the love of rhythmic gymnastics from the cradle, because I literally "lived" in the training hall. The first time as a student I came to class at the age of five and never regretted it.
We had the most real sport family, so I simply could not help but become an athlete. Dad was a professional volleyball player, and then became a coach, although he graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics. Mom did gymnastics and played volleyball and tennis.
In fact, I am happy that my mother brought me to rhythmic gymnastics. Moreover, when I began to skate, I realized that it was right choice... (Laughs.)

SD: Where did you study?
Natalia: I graduated from the Faculty of Physical Education of the Penza State Pedagogical University with a degree in “trainer-teacher”.

SD: How old were you when you completed the norm of master of sports in rhythmic gymnastics?
Natalia: I was fifteen years old. Most often, at this age, everyone becomes masters of sports. To do this, you need to get a certain amount of points in two competitions. If you type, you get a title, if not, then you still use attempts.

SD: Your older sister Olesya - Olympic champion... Tell me, what did you learn from her?
Natalia: Olesya is my idol in everything, and I have always tried to be equal to her. I learned from her not only correct execution some elements or movements, I learned from her how to behave correctly with coaches, at competitions, how to go out, how to deal with my fears, with my insecurity, with failures and difficulties. After all, sports are always ups and downs, and one must be able to experience both.

SD: What is she doing now? Do you and your sister discuss any professional issues? Do you help each other with advice?
Natalia: Now she lives in Moscow and is on maternity leave, brings up a son. Before the maternity leave, she worked as a coach, and I think that after that, she will definitely return to her favorite job.
When I compose programs for my gymnasts, I always consult with her. I shoot a video, send it to her, and she tells me what is best, we discuss something together, change something. As they say, one head is good, but two is better.

SD: What attracts you the most in coaching?
Natalia: I like to give children what I know and can do. And I like that they have a result. Many girls gain enough experience in a year, and this makes me happy and inspiring.
All coaches in Burtasy recruit children 5-6 years old, and if they prove themselves well, they get into the regional team.
The work of the coaches is hard, requires full dedication, but very interesting. We usually work from eleven in the afternoon until seven in the evening. The area of the hall in Burtasy is designed for a certain number of people, so the girls first have choreography in one part of the hall, then they go to training, then they change again.
A lot depends on the coach, because he guides his students and must do it in a highly professional manner. I love my job, so I do it easily, naturally, in a creative impulse.

SD: What is your relationship with your pupils? Who are you to them more - mom, friend, teacher?
Natalia: In the hall - I, first of all, a teacher, mentor, with adult girls outside the hall I have friendly relations.
In my opinion, not everyone can be a coach, even a good athlete does not always become a good coach... To do this, you need to find a common language with children and be able to support them at a certain moment. Therefore, for me to be a coach means to combine all this, to be able to find an approach to every child, to find mutual understanding with everyone. It is very important for the coach to win over the gymnasts and respect them. And then they will respect you too.

SD: How old can you start rhythmic gymnastics? Do boys take?
Natalia: Best of all - at 5-6 years old. If later - then stretching, flexibility is not the same. We have a girl who came at the age of 11, but she has incredible natural data, so she did it.
We are not taking the boys yet. I know that rhythmic gymnastics is popular among men in Japan, but, in my opinion, it is more - Rhythmic gymnastics... The objects used by gymnasts during performances are different from those used by women: a cane, a ring, a club and a jump rope. The choice of such items is not accidental. Here you can see the Japanese tradition: a cane is a pole that was used in ancient martial arts, a ring and a mace are a shield and a sword. The jump rope is perhaps the only object connecting male and female rhythmic gymnastics, since visually these are two completely different competitions: female look sports - plastic, light and elegant, masculine - athletic and belligerent, but at the same time choreographically holistic.

SD: And up to what age can you do this sport?
Natalia: This is individual for everyone. I graduated at the age of 18, Olesya studied until the age of 23. Some leave at 16. Therefore, it is difficult to limit yourself to some kind of framework, it depends primarily on physical capabilities.

SD: How long does it take for your pupils to attend classes? How to combine sports with school? Or do you always have to choose?
Natalia: We train 6 days a week, we have practically no holidays, in the summer we have a maximum of 10 days of rest. We work 4-6 hours a day, depending on age. Practice is everything for gymnasts!
It is possible to combine sports with school if you train in your city. If you get into the Russian national team and leave for Moscow, you have to take exams at school as an external student, and this, of course, is difficult.

SD: Do you have any female students who show great promise?
Natalia: I have such a girl. But talking about great victories it's still early, because everything can always change not in better side... I know this firsthand. I also had good data, and I got into the Russian national team, but six months before the World Cup I had a leg injury, and I could not participate in it. It was terribly disappointing, but what to do? .. After the first operation, I continued to train, after the second - I finished, and then there was the third.

SD: What should be done to achieve high results in sports?
Natalia: Not only natural data are important, but also hard work, self-discipline. We have many gymnasts doing at the same time on the site. Each is given tasks, and it depends only on her how much she will listen to the coach's comments, how correctly and clearly she will perform all the exercises.

SD: Do you agree with the statement of Heywood Brown: "Sport does not educate character, but reveals it"?
Natalia: Everyone has it differently. Someone is already a strong personality. Sport hardens someone, makes them more enduring, and literally turns someone into strong man... Sport made me a different person too: I think differently, I look at people differently, and it seems to me that I have a different meaning in life.

SD: Say after brilliant victory our Russian team at the Sochi Olympics were the young athletes inspired?
Natalia: Not that word. The next day, everyone came with glowing eyes and heatedly discussed the victory of our team. This is such an incentive for them!

SD: Share your plans for the future.
Natalia: I have a lot of plans, but I don't like to voice them out loud, because I'm afraid to jinx them. Today everything is fine, but tomorrow it might be different, right? .. You just have to work and enjoy it.

SD: What do you dream about?
Natalia: I dream that my student will become the world champion. I didn't succeed, so I want my students to achieve the highest awards.

SD: Would you like your children to continue the family business?
Natalia: Definitely, yes. If there is a girl, I will definitely give it to rhythmic gymnastics. I think that she will not mind continuing such a sports dynasty.
