M4 highway with indication of kilometers. Route M4 "Don" on the map

The M4 - Don highway has a length of 1,543.7 km and connects Moscow and Novorossiysk. Initially, the road had only two lanes for the movement of vehicles, while the lanes were not separated from each other by protective fences, which led to a large number of accidents, most often fatal. As a result, the track was called the road of death.

The construction time of the route is not exactly fixed, because it was built from the existing sections, but the date 1957-1961 is more common than the others, and it is taken for the time of the road's creation.

In 1984, the construction of a traffic-free road backup was started in the Moscow region. By 1990, two start-up complexes were built and put into operation in the Domodedovsky district of the Moscow region with a length of 18.4 km.

After the collapse of the USSR in December 1991, the Russian government included the highway in the list of federal roads, receiving its current name. At the same time, it was lengthened by almost 500 km due to the addition to it of a section of the former route Rostov-on-Don - Beslan - Baku from Rostov-on-Don to Pavlovskaya, Pavlovskaya - Krasnodar, Krasnodar - Dzhubga roads, as well as a section of the former Sukhum highway from Novorossiysk to Dzhubga.

In 1997, active construction of a road backup in the Moscow region was resumed, which made it possible in 1999 to commission 72 km of the road with 4-8 lanes, in 2000 - another 63 km in the Moscow and Tula regions. As a result, the current Don highway route is a continuation of Lipetskaya Street in Moscow. The former route - the old Kashirskoe highway has lost its former significance and is mainly used for regional transportation, as well as for bypassing traffic jams that appear on the Don highway due to repairs or accidents.

In the 2000s, the reconstruction of the road continued along its entire length, as a result of which most of the road received separate carriageways and multi-level intersections with other roads, the length of sections with artificial lighting increased. Bypasses were built for Bogoroditsk (2009), Verkhny Mamon (including a new bridge across the Don, 2009), Boguchar (2009), Efremov (2010), Yelets (including a new bridge across the Bystraya Sosna, 2011), Yarkin (2011), Tarasovsky (2013) ) and other settlements, the bypass of Voronezh was reconstructed (2013).

In summer, the road is often congested due to the large number of tourists traveling by car with their families from Moscow and other large cities to the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus, to other areas of the Rostov region, Stavropol and Krasnodar territories, Crimea, and also from for trucks transporting agricultural products from the southern regions of Russia to Moscow, St. Petersburg and other regions for sale. Significant traffic jams occur during repair work in the Voronezh and Rostov regions, as well as on a two-lane road section in the south of the Voronezh region.

Traffic jams also periodically arise in front of toll points on the toll section in the Moscow region (48-71 km).

V winter time during bad weather, there may be problems with driving along the mountainous section of the road in the Krasnodar Territory. But sometimes, due to snowfalls and ice, problems arise on flat areas: for example, at the end of 2009, traffic was paralyzed on an unreconstructed section of the road in the Rostov region due to heavy snowfalls for several days.

The main cork-forming places are constrictions from 2 + 2 to 1 + 1, for example, at the beginning of the narrow section Losevo - Pavlovsk. There is also a traffic jam around the village of Loseva, where the 1 + 1 road is braked by a zebra crossing in the center of the village. There are similar places in the region of Rostov-on-Don (narrow bridges and ramps near the Mega shopping center and Bataysk) and in the region of Krasnodar (a narrow bridge and ramp at the junction of the Rostov highway).

In general, the M4 highway today has the largest number of toll points and in the near future their number will grow.

Leaving Moscow in the direction of Novorossiysk, do not forget to call at our station of those. service and check the car. Confidence in the health of your car is a guarantee of the health of you and your passengers.

Due to the high traffic of the route during the summer period, please make an appointment in advance for those. inspection and repair.

The M-4 Don road was designed by the Road Design and Survey and Research Institute of GIPRODORNII and built in 1959-1966 in accordance with the requirements for a road of the third technical category - with a roadway width of 7 meters and two lanes. It was designed for light loads. From 1984 to 1990, a backup M-4 section in the Domodedovsky district of the Moscow region with a length of 18.4 km was built and commissioned. In 1999, 72 km of the road with 4 - 8 traffic lanes were put into operation, in 2000 - 63 km of the road in the Moscow and Tula regions. As a result, today's Don highway is a continuation of Lipetskaya Street in Moscow. The former route of the road - the old Kashirskoe highway - has lost its former significance and serves mainly for regional transportation, as well as for bypassing traffic jams that appear on the Don highway. In November 1998, in the Lipetsk region, a toll road section was inaugurated to bypass the village of Khlevnoe, about 20 km long, the first in modern history toll road of Russia. In the 2000s, the reconstruction of the road continued along its entire length, as a result of which most of the road received separate carriageways and multi-level intersections with other roads, the length of sections with night lighting increased. Bypasses were built for the cities of Bogoroditsk (2009), Efremov (2010), Yelets (2011) and other settlements.

In 2010, the road was transferred to the trust management of the State Company Avtodor. The state company, together with the Association of International Automobile Carriers, Opora Rossii, and the media, monitored the condition of roadside service facilities, recognizing more than 50% of existing facilities as uncomfortable to use, another 30% as not complying with legal requirements.

Almost all toll sections of the M-4 "Don" highway have an open toll collection system, with the exception of the 414-464 km section, which has a mixed system. The fare is paid once when crossing the Toll and is not charged from users who will move within the toll section without going through the Toll. The site in the Lipetsk region (414-464 km) has a closed toll collection system. The toll points are located at 416 km and 460 km. Payment is made at the entrance to the paid site and is valid for 12 hours from the date of payment. To leave the toll section, you must provide a receipt for payment of travel to the cashier-controller of the PVP. If the passage through the paid section took more than 12 hours, then the fare must be paid again.

Throughout the length paid sites There are stationary telephone sets for the emergency notification of special services about the occurrence of an emergency situation (emergency commissioners). Due to the divided flows of oncoming traffic, the absence of traffic lights and the adjoining of secondary roads at the same level, the estimated speed of movement on paid sites ranges from 90 to 130 km / h.

Also, on paid sites, elements are introduced automated control system road traffic(ASUDD) that provide:

  • collection of information about the situation on the road in real time through a video surveillance system
  • collection of information about weather conditions from automatic road weather stations;
  • collection of information on the operation of outdoor lighting and urgent operational information from emergency contact points;
  • prompt decision making
  • transfer of information to the relevant road maintenance services, if necessary, to emergency services;
  • informing road users about the high-speed mode of movement, about possible travel restrictions by means of information boards installed along the entire length of the road.

Mode toll travel for this section is introduced on the basis of Government decrees Russian Federation, which in turn were adopted in accordance with Article 36 of the Federal Law "On Roads and Road Activities in the Russian Federation and on Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of the Russian Federation".

When does the Trolleybus M4 run?

M4 trolleybus starts operating at 12:08 am on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.

Every time, returning from travels to the sea, I write about what the road was, in what condition the track is at a given time, what has changed over the past since last time... I pay attention to gas stations, and places of rest and snacks, and hotels for overnight stays. I will not change this tradition even now. Before proceeding to the story about the rest, I will show how we drove along the M4 "Don" highway to the sea, I will briefly talk about the most important thing.
Our trip south by car took place in June 2016. All the way I collected receipts from gas stations, toll stations at toll stations, cafes, and more. How much it costs, payment time ... Such things are quickly forgotten. You will not have time to reach your destination, you have already forgotten everything. After all, the main thing in a trip is not numbers, but emotions.
In this article I'll show you highway M4, will do accents on paid sites (quantity, fare, location), I'll tell you where we refueled, where we ate, where we spent the night. I am constantly asked about this. So it is relevant.

I will conclude the article with a story about hotels on the Don highway, where you can stay overnight on the way to the south. It is based on the statistics of the most popular hotels among travelers, which I have as a Booking partner.
Here's a plan. So let's go!
First, I'll show our path in photographs. So I will introduce you to the track and its condition. You will know what to expect. :)

Toll road sections on the M4 highway

I heard on TV that in August 2016, the eighth toll section of the M4 highway opened. Judging by our experience, there were already nine of them as of June 2016. In my "piggy bank" 7 checks + 1 check we forgot to take + 1 section we drove on a free road.
Yes, Kostya decided to be a researcher and find out what these free bypass roads are. Alternative, as they are called. I was categorically against - there are a thousand kilometers ahead, I have no time for experiments. As a result, we toured only the first paid section from Moscow. The detour is quite good. Although it is a two-strip, but the canvas is normal.

The road quality on this bypass is normal.

The next time we drove off the road at the sign "free travel", we immediately returned back - the normal road ended ... Kostya did not want to experiment anymore, fortunately ...

Gas station on M4

Back in Moscow m We refueled at a Shell gas station (41 liters for RUB 1,680). The petrol turned out to be bad. The car was constantly deaf. There was one more time during the entire 3.5-week trip when we refueled in the Shell, and the problem was the same. Here's your favorite gas station ...
The rest of the time, on the way south, we refueled at Lukoil, and everything was fine:

  • Gas station "Lukoil" at 720 km. in the Voronezh region 38 liters. - 1,437 rubles.
  • Gas station "Lukoil" in st. Kushchevskaya 28 y. - 1,119 rubles.

New complex Lukoil in Kushchevskaya (1145 km, on the right) consists of a hotel, a shopping center, a restaurant, a maintenance station and a gas station.

In total, on the way to the south, we refueled for 4,240 rubles. (rounding up). This gasoline was enough for us to get from Moscow to Anapa, drive there for a week and then get to Gelendzhik.
In Gelendzhik, we refueled again at Lukoil (43 liters for 1,705 rubles). And the next time I was in Sochi a week later ...

M4 toilets

Along the road, there are often brick toilets of the "hole in the floor" type - and free-standing ones, most often near public transport stops and on large recreation areas.

These toilets are mostly dirty. In order not to drag all this into the car later, I recommend choosing gas stations for sanitary stops. In any case, the toilets there are much cleaner, and you can wash your hands and drink coffee in a cafe.
Coming from Moscow, stop somewhere at a large gas station in the Moscow region (Shell, Gazpromneft, etc.). In the Tula region with gas stations, where there are toilets, a huge problem, in Lipetsk, in general, too. Skip the Moscow region, then wait for the Voronezh region. By the way, the same goes for the way back. Don't count on the Tula and Lipetsk regions! To the woods too. This is not the right track.

Where to eat on the M4

We have a tradition - we always stop at a new generation Lukoil gas station in the Voronezh Region, 720 km away. (there are gas stations on both sides of the track!). These are not just gas stations - these are modern complexes with cafes, toilets, a store, children's playgrounds (both indoors and outdoors) and so on.

Cafe "Meridian"

Hotels on the M4 highway

There are plenty of hotels on the M4 highway. These are simple motels for truckers, and more or less decent hotels. What advice can you give to those who have not bothered about where to spend the night on the way to the sea? Better to avoid cheap motels right off the road. Choose hotels that are at least slightly remote from the highway and have a closed area. An example of such a hotel remote from the territory is "Rose of the Winds" (practically on the border of the Voronezh and Rostov regions).

If you are not an extreme by nature, book your hotel room in advance. Not sure when you will arrive at your hotel? It doesn't matter at all. You know the day. Check-in - at any time of the day.

Analyzed the statistics of bookings by city and hotel. Most often, the following cities and towns are chosen for a night stop on the way to the south (M4 highway):

  • Voronezh,
  • Millerovo,
  • Mines,
  • Red ear,
  • Kovalevka,
  • Aksai,
  • Rostov-on-Don,
  • Mayakovsky,
  • Kushchevskaya.

The choice depends on where people started from. It is more convenient for Muscovites to stay in Rostov and in the vicinity of it. Petersburgers - in Voronezh. Tulyaks - in the Krasnodar Territory. There are, of course, personal preferences, but everything is individual here.
Now the most popular hotels in May, June and July 2016. The list is very different from what I would recommend to you. I suspect that the majority of hotels are popular due to economic preferences (the same "Alpha" in Rostov) and less - due to comfort and coziness (for example, the Rodina hotel in Mayakovsky). What you choose - decide for yourself.

We always stay overnight. We do not take risks, we do not strain. Riding without rest is not about us. It's not about us going into the unknown, looking for where to stay for the night along the way. We stay overnight in pre-booked hotels that provide a relaxing stay and good food.
We never force ourselves. We get up at a comfortable time and drive at a calm speed. And we get pleasure from the process of driving. Yes, the path is not short. About 1,600 kilometers. But on a highway like the M4, it's not scary at all. Excellent track, God forbid, that there were more of these!

The M4 Don highway consists of toll sections with different fares. All tariffs with prices are collected in this article and are relevant for today. The last reduced prices for travel on toll sections of the Don highway occurred on 01.10.2018, in the future the data will be kept up to date and changed in time.

In addition to the current tariffs, there are also visual maps of the road sections to which they apply. The information provided allows you to accurately determine the costs that will have to be included in the total cost of a trip to the south if you plan to go on vacation by car to Georgia, Crimea or to the resorts of the Krasnodar Territory, such as Sochi, Anapa and Gelendzhik.

Alternative free route: Stupino - Kokino - Shemetevo - Gremyachee - Krasnye Ozera, 45 km hook.

Detour of Bogoroditsk (225-260 km)

A section with an excellent road surface due to the fact that many trucks go around it, trying to save money. Maximum speed is 120 km / h.

When at the entrance to the checkpoint you will be given a check - save it, because at the end, upon departure, it will be necessary to present it to the controller.

Alternative route without payment: Krutoy Verkh - Bogoroditsk - Kuzovka, there is no difference in mileage.

Detour of Efremov (287-321 km)

An alternative route runs through the settlements of Chernyatino and Pushkari, there is no difference in mileage.

Avoiding the toll road

Paid sections of the M4 Don highway can be bypassed with a strong desire - this will save a certain amount of cash in your pocket, but will significantly increase the time spent behind the wheel. The presented interactive map allows you to consider in detail the alternative roads and settlements through which they pass, to do this, simply click on the "plus" and "minus" on the left.

Map of all toll sections and their detours

The presented "paper" version has a high resolution when zoomed in and more relevant information.

Even if you are not intimidated by the size of the current fare for toll sections, detours can still come in handy. The fact is that in the summer, due to the ongoing repair of roads and their periodic narrowing, in some places there are traffic jams on the M4, stretching for tens of kilometers. In this case, there are 3 ways out:

  1. Stay in a traffic jam for several hours and breathe in exhaust gases.
  2. Try to go around the stream along the sides or driving into a ditch in an adjacent field.
  3. Turn off in advance and calmly drive along secondary roads.
