At the Olympiad, held from July 16 to 24, 2017 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Russian schoolchildren won five gold medals in an intellectual competition attended by 424 students from 88 countries.

The Russian team won one more gold medal this year than at the previous Olympiad. Kirill Parshukov, a graduate of the Physics and Mathematics Boarding School of Syktyvkar, believes that the secret of victory is to "constantly force yourself to decide something and look for sources of inspiration to sit and do physics." Physics took him about five hours a day. “This is already before the Olympics for a month. And before that, during the year - when more than five hours, when less. Before that, I was preparing not for the international Olympiad, but for the Russian one, in the ninth or tenth grade. Kirill admitted that "I was going to Indonesia purposefully to win, because the Russian team is constantly winning four gold medals and one silver or three gold and two silver". “There you had to win - and nothing else. There was no excitement, only on the very tour, when you realize that the time is coming to an end, and the task is not fully completed - only then I had to worry a little. We were given five hours for a theoretical round and five for an experiment, on one day we passed the theory, on the second - the experiment. It turned out to be more complicated, although in fact I hoped that I would do the experiment better than the theory, but it turned out differently, ”said the young man.

According to Dmitry Plotnikov, a graduate of the Moscow school No. 1329, he highly appreciated his chances of winning, but the rivals turned out to be worthy, it was especially difficult to get around the guys from Asian countries. “I talked with a couple of strong guys from Ukraine and Belarus, but we cook better, so the results of the Russian team were better. Usually the strongest rivals are the guys from Asian countries, the Europeans are a little weaker, ”the agency's interlocutor noted.

We talked with the guys and found out the details about their victory and plans for the future.

Last week in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, the 48th International Physics Olympiad IPhO 2017 was held. More than 400 schoolchildren from 88 countries took part in it. About half received medals young physicists, and the highest award, a gold medal, was presented to 60 schoolchildren.

Russia at the Olympiad was represented by four eleventh graders and one tenth grader from different parts of the country: Dmitry Plotnikov from the Moscow school number 1329, Stanislav Krymsky from the Academic Lyceum "Physics and Technology School" of St. Petersburg, Vasily Yugov from school number 146 Perm, Kirill Parshukov from the Physics and Mathematics boarding school of the Komi Republic and Sergey Vlasenko from school number 8 in Voronezh. Tell us about your passion for physics. How did you start, how did you manage to reach such a high level?

Sergey Vlasenko: I probably got an interest in physics and mathematics from my grandfather - he was an engineer. I began to study physics seriously in the 9th grade, when I went to Vseros. And then it somehow went by itself.

Kirill Parshukov: In the summer after the 8th grade, I went to the Kirov School of Music, where I got interested in Olympiad physics. I set myself a goal to get to Vseros at 9, became a prize-winner. In the 10th grade, he entered the number of candidates for the national team.

Dmitry Plotnikov: A physics teacher from 1524 lyceum motivated me, I studied there from 6th to the beginning of 9th grade.

Stanislav Krymsky: When I was studying in primary school, I was interested in reading physics textbooks. Therefore, by the 6th grade, I was already ready to participate in the city Olympiad in this subject. The tasks for the 7th grade were simple, but for the 8th and higher they already caused difficulties, I had to study a lot. Gradually I learned the theory, but I had to learn how to solve problems by applying it. I took the archive of the Olympiad for a certain class, solved problems for all the years. It became a habit, like exercise. In 2014 I went to all-Russian, I was then in the 7th grade. Became a prize-winner. It was then that Valery Pavlovich Slobodyanin called me to Dolgoprudny for a training camp for the IJSO. At the training camp, I realized that I can do a lot. I believed in myself. It was motivating. In addition to physics, it was necessary to go deep into chemistry and biology, because at the IJSO assignments are given in all three subjects. In the end, I went to the team and in Argentina I received my first gold medal in the internship, albeit a junior one. It was then that my teammates explained to me that a real achievement can only be considered participation in the “big mezhnar” - IPHO. I had to train for another three years, and everything worked out. The experience of participating in the IJSO helped a lot. I understood what it means to "bot".

Vasily Yugov: By the seventh grade, I was already an experienced Olympiad and was a good student of mathematics. After the sixth grade, I moved to the physics and mathematics school 146 in Perm, where a wonderful physics teacher, Sergei Evgenievich Polyansky, works. With an experienced eye, he saw something in me and took up my preparation with all his might. Two trips to the Kirov LMSh also helped. As a result, in the eighth grade, I was already a winner of the All-Russian Olympiad in Physics for the ninth grade. The secret to success is simple. Daily work, concentration, an excellent mentor and, probably, natural data.

Have you participated in olympiads in other subjects?

Sergey Vlasenko: Especially major victories I probably didn’t have any other subjects. I took part in the final round of the All-Russia in mathematics in the 11th grade, was a prize-winner in the region; became the winner of Phystech. And in the 9th grade I was the winner of the region in ecology and the prize-winner in chemistry. I also participated in regional computer science Olympiads.

Kirill Parshukov: I was interested in the Olympiad in mathematics, I did not get further than the prize in the region.

Dmitry Plotnikov: In other subjects - not really.

Stanislav Krymsky: Three times I received the diploma of the winner at the All-Russian in mathematics. Unfortunately, it is impossible to fight for a place in the team at the mezhnar in two subjects at the same time. It hurts. I really envy Hermione Granger with her time wheel. I just need it! In the 7th grade, I also went to the All-Russia in astronomy, I even became a prize-winner. But astronomy had to be abandoned, as well as computer science. You can achieve high results by studying only one subject. You can not be scattered.

How did you train before the IPHO?

Sergey Vlasenko: First, about 30 people were selected from Vseros 10th grade. Then there were several training and selection camps and Vseros 11 grade, after which 7 people remained, who then went to the Asian Physics Olympiad, APhO. Based on the results of APhO and the previous rating, 5 people (us) were chosen, who participated in the IPhO. There were one more training camps immediately before the Olympics.

The camp includes lectures, seminars, training and qualifying theoretical and experimental tours of the international type.

Kirill Parshukov: During the year, there were training camps, they prepared and selected us for them.

Dmitry Plotnikov: Personally, I did not prepare, I tried to relax psychologically, because most of the guys merge on stupid mistakes.

Stanislav Krymsky: Intensely. The team arrived in Dolgoprudny on July 3. Installation camps started on July 4th. 10 days of classes is like a good change at a summer school. This is exactly the time when you have time to enter the rhythm of your studies, and fatigue has not yet had time to manifest itself. There were many experiments and interesting lectures with a background for the future.

Vasily Yugov: Training took place at home (self-training) and in Dolgoprudny, at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, where the national team is preparing.

Why do we need Olympiads at all?

First, they stimulate the participants to think creatively - the Olympiad problems are non-trivial, you cannot prepare for them by simple cramming.

Thirdly, they show future young specialists what tasks are now in demand in practice, what branches and areas of scientific knowledge are relevant. It helps young men and women move from learning academic theory to creating practical value.

The irony of the situation lies in the fact that all members of the Russian team are winners or prize-winners of the All-Russia (according to the selection condition for the first training camp), so they already have the right to enter any physical university without exams.

These benefits, however, are useful to foreigners who want to get an education at a Russian institute. (For example, many foreign affairs specialists from Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan study at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.)

Moreover, many international scientific and industrial centers are looking for future specialists at such Olympiads. Winners and prize-winners of international competitions in the future receive invitations to prestigious, interesting and highly paid jobs.

What about financial gain?

Vladimir Putin was the first to take the initiative to reward gifted schoolchildren who won prizes at national and international Olympiads. The presidential decree "On measures to support talented children and youth", issued in 2016, proposed to award 5,350 cash prizes per year to schoolchildren and students. In particular, for a victory in an All-Russian or International Olympiad - 60 thousand rubles (total 1,250 awards), prize-winners of the Olympiads - 4,100 prizes, 30 thousand rubles each.
However, for 2017, the program, alas, was not extended. The only ones who are lucky are Moscow schoolchildren who receive awards from the regional budget.
This problem was raised by the participants in Putin's meeting with schoolchildren.
