Natalya Kosyakova, AIF: Batyr, why did you choose sumo?

Batyr Altyev: The section was not far from the house, my friend brought me there. I tried it - I liked it: very simple, very clear rules, everything is so fast, dynamic, bright - 5-10 seconds of absolute beauty and harmony. Dohyo (the circle where the fight takes place - Ed.) And two options for the outcome: either the one who goes outside the circle loses, or the one who first touches the ground with any part of the body, except for the feet. At the same time, I was engaged in sambo, there were good successes, but sumo still prevailed.

- You were in a hurry to achieve serious results?

As soon as I found out that our country does not have a single world champion in weight category 85 kg, I began to dream that I would be the first. I wanted to become a legend of Russian sumo and, to be honest, I was very worried that someone would be ahead of me. After serving in the army, the dream became a clear goal. He was simply possessed - in his prayers he asked the Almighty to give these victories, and in return he promised to work in the sweat of his brow.

For the first time I got to the World Championship in 2013, already being the European champion. There was no experience of such competitions yet, therefore, having beautifully won the first fight with a Japanese opponent and caught courage, I stopped thinking and analyzing. In general, there, in Hong Kong, I first removed the strongest fighter, and then myself ...

He returned from the championship to Moscow without any medals, but this loss gave more for further growth than a victory: he understood his mistakes, shortcomings, and also that not everything comes at once. At the world championship in Osaka, I was already the third, and in 2016 in Mongolia, a country where wrestling enjoys special respect, I became the undisputed world champion.

There is no room for error in sumo, it is impossible to take revenge here. Photo: From the personal archive of Batyr Altyev

Win to the maximum

- You are 25, you are the undisputed leader, what are your ambitions now?

In addition to the World Championship, there are also the World Games - an analogue of the Olympic Games for non-Olympic sports. I was the champion of Moscow, Russia, won the European Championship four times, took the world “gold”, I had to climb the heights of world competitions. In 2013, he took second place in Colombia, and this year he won the long-awaited “gold” in Wroclaw, Poland.

I was preparing for these competitions just frantically, sometimes fatigue drove to nausea, but I brought myself to my senses and moved on. I always remember the words Suvorov: "It's hard to learn - easy to fight."

In Poland he swept away all rivals like a broom. And he also won additional fights (according to the rules World Games there is a special day for this) wrestlers in the absolute weight category - representatives of Ukraine, Japan, Mongolia. Lost only to our 180-kilogram Vasily Margiev. With my 90 - not bad.

Dreams do not run out - I want to win several more times, so that it would be difficult to catch up with me. It is very difficult to become world champion, but it is even more difficult to keep this title. All wrestlers see me performing, all have videos where you can trace most of the subtleties - everyone is preparing for me, and this is the difficulty.

- Just on physical strength perhaps you can’t resist. Who inspires you?

I have an amazing coach - Honored Coach of Russia in Sambo and Sumo Oleg Komarov. He "burns" with sports and ignites all of us. I am his fourth world champion.

The coach is actually the second father, the athlete spends a lot of time with him - more than with his parents. In my youth, it sometimes seemed to me that I wasn’t spending my younger years - trainings and training camps took almost all the time. But Oleg Vitalievich always found words that again and again gave rise to courage in me. He said: "Believe me, now you work a lot, but then you will rest, and those who rest and enjoy now, will then work tirelessly." And so it turns out.

Komarov is a creator man, a master of organizing tournaments, championships, always knows what each athlete needs, where and at what time it is best to train him and what performances to send. In short, I am very lucky.

In general, there is a very strong training of sumo wrestlers in Moscow. We train in sports school"Fighter". Last year, our group as part of the national team won the European Championship.

Crafted Weapon

- The sumo wrestler has immense strength and many other extraordinary skills. Does it help in life?

Sumo is a martial art and a real weapon. In the gym, on the dohyo - this is a sport, here show all your strength and skills, fight, but outside the gym, the rules are different.

We understand very well that we have special training, which is absolutely not required to demonstrate in everyday life. What is called "for personal use" - please: slipped on the ice - the trained ability to stay on your feet will certainly work, but if someone, figuratively speaking, touches his shoulder, it is better to be the first to apologize than to regret what he has done all his life. In a conversation with an interlocutor, the sumo wrestler will not go ahead, and we also know how to slide between people in a crowd.

- Some parents whose children want to practice sumo have some fears ...

Yes, many people think that sumo is only a wrestling for huge, clumsy heavyweights. In fact, this is an unfortunate stereotype that it is not clear who needs it. Look at me at least: athletic built, nothing superfluous. Sumo is a fight for real men, because there is no room for error, here it is impossible to take revenge. In sambo, judo, Greco-Roman wrestling if you fell, then you can recoup and you have time for this, but in sumo it is impossible. I touched the floor - I lost, I went out of the circle, or they carried you out - I lost, I got up uncomfortably, I was intercepted - I lost. I call sumo sapper wrestling.

Sumo - fair fight... Before the start of the fight, the wrestlers sit opposite each other on the dohyo and, performing a certain ritual with their hands, make it clear: "I am clean, I am without weapons, I am going out with you in a fair fight, let's face off in a fair fight."

On physical level this type of wrestling perfectly pumps the legs and harmoniously develops the whole body - from the tips of the toes to the crown of the head. And which parent does not want the boy to have healthy legs, a huge strong back, powerful shoulders, forearms, arms, neck?

The young man becomes dexterous, flexible, moreover, he begins to understand the intricacies of partner relationships, because you cannot make mistakes, everything needs to be thought out to the smallest details: how the struggle will go, what the outcome can be. It is also a kind of chess. In addition, sumo trains attention, coordination, stability.

Breathing is worked out too. In those seconds that the fight lasts, you have to invest and hold your breath for almost the entire fight. And here control on an intuitive level, and on microns, is also an excellent school.

After many hours of training, self-confidence grows very much - you understand that you have done a titanic job and all this will return in full.

Why does an athlete need a guitar?

- Do the rivals learn?

We all learn from each other in the fight itself, as well as watching videos of the performances of the most titled world-class wrestlers. It is also useful to study other types of national struggle - for example, Tuvan kuresh. And we also study, I noticed this when I trained for some time in one of the Japanese sumo schools. If the Japanese struggle is aimed at pressing forcefully, then we have everything on techniques, everything on sensitivity. The colleagues liked our style and were invited to come again.

- Batyr, what do you like to do in those rare hours when there are no championships and trainings?

I really like to sing, and I do it well - in the evenings with friends or at karaoke, where, it happens, I go for one hour for 2-3 hours. I decided to resume my guitar lessons. I think everything can be done if the time is right.
