"The first year I played for dinners." The story of a goalkeeper who was not useful to Chemist and played in Finland

The 19-year-old Russian goalkeeper, born in Bulgaria, became a revelation in the main Finnish league last season and a contender for the number one position in the youth team of our country.

The story of 19-year-old Georgiev is a vivid example of how we are sometimes careless about our talents. In the 2013/14 season, Alexander was in the “Chemist's” reserve in the MHL, and a year later he played 14 matches for the main squad of the Finnish TPS, simultaneously winning youth league Finland (players under 20) and becoming the best goalkeeper in the playoffs.

Moreover, the legendary TPN finished the season in the penultimate place, but according to statistics young goalkeeper you can't say that - 2.21 goals conceded per game on average. Naturally, the hockey player was noticed in the Russian youth team, in which he showed himself brightly at the recent Black Sea Cup: almost 150 "dry" minutes, only two goals conceded.

At the moment, perhaps, it is Georgiev who has the greatest chances of becoming the main goalkeeper Russian youth at the 2016 World Cup.

NORREN CALLED TO TPS

- It is not difficult to assume that in “Chemist”, who missed such a goalkeeper, now they bite their elbows ...

In fact, I have the most positive memories of "Chemist". I spent five years in Voskresensk: I played four years at school for the 96th year of birth team and the MHL. It is not the club's fault that coach Yuri Strakhov did not believe in me. He relied on goalkeepers born in 92 and 93.

It is interesting to understand: to one of the best goalkeepers countries you grew up thanks to the wonderful Finnish methods of training goalkeepers or in “Chemist” just did not understand?

I have greatly improved in a year in the TPU, but I did not grow from scratch. Was in "Chemist" for good standing, was considered promising, but in the MHL I was not given a chance, although before signing the contract they promised to play at least ten matches per season. As a result, I didn't get any practice at all.

- How did the third goalkeeper of the MHL outsider end up in the legendary Finnish club?

From the age of 10, every year he went to the goalkeeper camp of Frederick Norrena, whom everyone knows by championship season in "Ak Bars". From this season, he entered coaching staff TPN, where he ended his playing career. With his submission, I was invited to watch. Moreover, there was no talk about a possible contract then, which is understandable, because I did not even have statistics at the junior level - since I did not play a match in the MHL. In Finland, I took part in several control games - and as a result, the coaching staff of the youth team decided to leave me.

EXERCISE NAMED AFTER YURZINOV

- And in the first season you stepped into the senior team.

The main team collapsed, and the youth, on the contrary, performed great. Our coach Miku Elomo was invited to work with the main squad after the resignation of its head coach in November. I came to training on January 2, and they told me: "Today you are playing." So he made his debut. I didn't even have time to worry.

- Have you trained with the main team before?

Yes, I participated in the classes, but in official matches I didn't even sit on the bench - there were two of my own goalkeepers. It turns out that they decided to immediately throw me into battle.

- Finland is now the world leader in elite goalkeepers. By what means?

They work a lot on little things, attention to seemingly insignificant details. There are exercises that are not used at all in Russia.

At the tournament in Sochi, you amazed with your calmness. Is there also serious work being done on goalkeeper psychology in Finland?

I have always tried not to pay attention to the score, not to get stuck in the game on the missed goals or "rescues". These are basic things for every goalkeeper, but in Finland the attitude is really different from the Russian one. It didn't work out for you during the match - they will cheer you up, they will say: "It's okay, it's okay." And in Russia you can hear a lot of "interesting" about yourself from a coach - and not a goalkeeper coach, but a chief, who often does not know the specifics. We can yell at you, try to pump up, which is not always beneficial.

- Vladimir Yurzinov, who has achieved great success with the TPN, is often remembered in Turku?

Why do they remember? He calls in now. By the way, I talked to him once. Yurzinov is very respectful. Here's an interesting detail: one of the training exercises is named after him.

- And what did he tell you?

I came to the locker room with my coach and wished them success. He said: "The main thing is to work."

THE KHL IS NAME, BUT ALL THOUGHTS ABOUT THE TPN

- Now you are probably invited to the KHL as well.

After the season, I signed a contract with TPS for two years, and now all my thoughts are only on how to gain a foothold in the adult team. I have to withstand decent competition: I must prove that I am worth something. In Turku, they believed in me, so I want to thank the management of a good game. It would be wrong for me to run away after the first more or less successful season.

- And who owns the rights to you, by the way?

As far as I know - "Chemist".

- Did you feel how attention was growing to you in Russia?

When I played in the youth team, I gave one interview, and as soon as I started playing in the TPS, interest immediately increased. Articles about me began to appear in the press: who I am, where did I come from ...

- Did you expect a call to the youth team?

During the season, no one contacted me, so I calmly went to Bulgaria to heal my injury and with thoughts of rest. I turned off all my phones, but the youth team found me through my father. Dad came and said: they say, Valery Bragin will call now. What to hide, my joy knew no bounds. I always watched the youth world championships very carefully and dreamed of getting into the team. I will make every effort to make the dream come true.

- After the successful Black Sea Cup, you have become closer to this dream.

The coaches said they were counting on me in the future. Although one successful gathering is not a reason to relax. I will not be able to rest - very soon the monthly training camp will begin.

You have almost no experience playing with North Americans. You can fill the gap during the November super series, where the TPN has the right not to let you go.

The matches for the national team and the club are really different. I would like to test myself in games with the best youth in Canada. This is useful. If they call me, I hope they will let me go.

- You have dual citizenship in all reference books. What connects you with Bulgaria?

I was born there. But he did not live even a year - the family moved to Moscow. So he grew up in Russia. And in hockey school of course went here too.

Usually the father leads the son into sports. If he is Bulgarian, then why did he choose hockey and not football, which is much more popular in his homeland?

Daddy wanted me to become professional athlete, but he gave me to hockey, because he considered this sport to be the most developed and successful in Russia. Although he himself had never followed hockey before.

- Have you ever been invited to the Bulgarian national team?

- Although you are now probably the most famous Bulgarian hockey player?

Maybe so ( laughs).

Playing career

Alexander Georgiev was born into a mixed Russian-Bulgarian family in Bulgaria, but at the age of one he moved with his parents to permanent residence in Moscow. Alexander began to study hockey in sports school"Moscow Penguins", also after the penguins, played for the SSHOR "Rus", after which he moved in 2009 to the Resurrection "Chemist", for which he played in the junior leagues. During the period of the team's performance in the youth hockey league under the leadership of Yuri Strakhov, Georgiev was not given playing time. Since at the age of 10 Alexander annually attended Fredrik Norrena's training camp in the Finnish city of Pietarsaari, he received an invitation to watch the TPS club, where Fredrik Norrena, who ended his playing career, became the team's goalkeeping coach. After several friendly games, the club agreed to conclude an agreement with the player, since Georgiev had European Union citizenship.

Initially, Georgiev was sent to the youth team, where he independently had to provide himself with housing and hockey equipment, and only from the beginning of 2015 he began to be involved in the training of the main team. On January 2, 2015, Alexander made his debut in the Finnish Hockey League in a match against the Tappara club, conceding 3 goals. On February 12 of the same year, he issued the first game "zero" in adult career in the meeting with "KPC", having saved all 37 shots, for which he was awarded the title of the first star of the match. By the decision of the coaching staff, Georgiev soon again gave way to the main goalkeeper, Teem Lassile, and spent the rest of the season in youth team having won the Finnish Youth Championship with her.

The 2015-16 season turned out to be uneven for Georgiev, as he was forced to fight with Oskari Setiasen for the second goalkeeper place, and managed to hold only 10 meetings in the regular season. On January 11, 2016, Alexander was loaned out for free to the club of the second Finnish league "SaPKo", where he played 13 more games. During the playoffs due to the injury of Setyasena Georgiev was recalled from the loan, and managed to hold two meetings in a series against the club "Karpyat".

In 2016, Alexander took part in the youth world championship, being the first goalkeeper of the team, and won silver championship medals with her.

In the 2016-17 season, after Lassila left TPS, the fight between Georgiev and Setiasen flared up with renewed vigor, but again the coaching staff gave more preference to the Finnish goalkeeper, allowing him to hold 35 meetings against the Russian's 27. Despite this, at the end of the season, Alexander became the league's best goalkeeper according to statistics, having the lowest average number of goals conceded per game, and was among the best in terms of the percentage of reflected shots, which, according to Fredrik Norrena, was a direct result of competition in the team. On January 23, 2017, Georgiev extended his contract with the club for three years.

In July 2017, he signed a rookie contract with the New York Rangers NHL team. The 2017/18 season began at the Rangers farm club in the AHL Hartford Wolf Pack. At the end of the season, after Ondřej Pavelec's injury and the loss of his chances of reaching the playoffs, he was called up to the main Rangers. On February 22, 2018, he made his NHL debut in a match against the Montreal Canadiens, saved 38 of 40 shots, but the team lost 1: 3 (the third goal was scored into an empty net). He won his first victory in his 3rd match against the Edmonton Oilers, conceding 2 goals after 37 shots.

On November 21, 2018, Alexander made the first shutout of his NHL career against the New York Islanders, deflecting all 29 shots on target, and thereby helped the Rangers win 5-0, becoming the first star of the match. On March 30, 2019, Georgiev made the second shutout of his NHL career in the match against the Philadelphia Flyers, thereby repeating the franchise's record on clean sheets for a season for newcomers, which belongs to club legend Henrik Lundqvist.
