Large-caliber sniper rifle OSV 96 on a bipod, with a 12x optical sight

In 1995, the Tula Instrument Design Bureau presented an experimental self-loading large-caliber rifle V-94, made for the 12.7x107 cartridge and designed to defeat manpower in personal armor, lightly armored vehicles, counter-sniper combat, and disable technical means enemy.

The rifle has an automatic gas engine, the gas chamber is located on top of the barrel. The barrel bore is locked by turning the bolt, while the bolt engages directly with the barrel, which made it possible to unload the receiver. The relatively high recoil energy of the powerful cartridge is partially absorbed muzzle brake reactive action (and the gases discharged by it do not create additional load on the arrow) and a shock-absorbing back of the head on a wooden butt.

Pistol control grip - plastic. The reload handle is located on the right.

Cartridges are fed from a direct detachable box magazine with a capacity of 5 rounds.

Rifle OSV-96 in a folded position

One of the problems large-caliber rifles, made under a powerful cartridge and designed for long sighting ranges - large dimensions. The B-94 was made folding - in the stowed position, the barrel with the gas vent system leans back and right and is pressed against the receiver. In this position, it is more convenient to carry the rifle, put it in vehicles... When transported in this form, the breech section of the barrel and the receiver are closed from clogging with covers.

It is possible to use various optical and night sights. In particular. The rifle was offered with a PSO-1M2-02 telescopic sight with sighting scales designed for ranges from 100 to 2000 m. A POS 12x50 day telescopic sight with a magnification of 12x was also proposed. It is possible to install the PKN night sight, which belongs to the second generation night vision devices. An adjustable sliding bipod, fixed on a special console under the barrel, serves as an emphasis when firing. The bipod hinge allows them to be rotated relative to the rifle in the transverse plane, which facilitates positioning in position.

After some modernization, the rifle entered service under the designation OSV-96, it is used mainly by the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and special units of the FSB.

Rifle OSV-96 - large-caliber gun Russian production capable of hitting targets at long distances. The development of the gun began in the first half of the 90s, and entered service with the army at the end of the same decade.

The device of the OSV-96 rifle

The operation of the gun is based on the action of powder gases after a shot. The designers found an opportunity to compensate big sizes weapons that are inherent in all models of this class. For convenient transfer, the OSV-96 can be folded: the barrel and the gas venting system are folded back to the receiver, and the breech section of the barrel and the box itself are covered with a cover. If there is an urgent need for shooting, it will take several seconds to transfer to the firing position from the folded one.

To increase the accuracy and efficiency of firing, a compensator brake was installed, made according to the type of reactive action. It is installed on the muzzle and extinguishes the retraction of the barrel with powder gases after the shot. The standard sighting mechanism is represented by the front sight and the whole, which are folded along the barrel.

The shutter is responsible for locking the barrel. This occurs on four lugs. They are fastened to the breech stops when locking and transfer the force of the powder gases after the shot to the bottom of the ammunition sleeve. The cocking lever is on the right.

There is a special console on the front of the receiver. The bipod is placed on it, which are adjustable in height. The bipod is responsible for rotating the console in the longitudinal plane relative to the gun barrel. This feature allows the rifle to be adjusted for use on surfaces with any irregularities. The downside is the bipod attachment to the barrel. This negatively affects shooting accuracy.

Tactical specifications OSVM-96 Burglar:

  • Ammunition 12.7x108 mm is used for power supply;
  • Barrel length - 1000 mm;
  • The total length with the barrel folded is 1,154 mm;
  • The total length with the unfolded barrel is 1,746 mm;
  • Folded gun width - 196 mm;
  • The width of the unfolded weapon is 381 mm;
  • Maximum working distance - 1.8 km;
  • The weight of the unloaded OSV-96 sniper rifle without optics is 11.7 kg.

If the shooter is not satisfied with the factory sight, optics for night and day shooting can be installed on the Picatinny rail. DS 3 × 12-50MCT is considered standard, but the owner, if desired, can install another, similar to this one. The choice of scopes for the OSV-96 sniper rifle in weapon stores is wide.

The first years of production, the stock was made of wood. On modern models, it has given way to high-strength plastic. A rubber recoil pad is installed on the butt, the main task of which is to extinguish the recoil after a shot, which can reduce accuracy.

How does Cracker work?

The work is based on an automatic system. The barrel is locked and unlocked independently. The shell of the spent charge is thrown out of the gun during the operation of the mechanisms without the participation of the shooter. New ammunition from the store is fed and sent to the chamber under the influence of mechanisms that are influenced by the force of the powder gases.

As already mentioned above, the basis of the operation of automation is the power of powder gases. After firing, they travel along the gas outlet in the barrel and clip, then enter the gas tube and begin to move the bolt to the rear extreme position, putting pressure on the piston of the bolt carrier.

When it starts moving to the extreme rear position, the following happens:

  • The barrel bore is unlocked;
  • The shell of the spent charge is removed from the chamber and thrown out through a special window;
  • The return spring is compressed to the maximum maximum;
  • The striker is transferred to the cocked position;
  • A new cartridge comes from the store to the ramming line.

When the return spring begins to expand, the breech is sent to its forward-most position. At this time, it happens: the bore is locked by turning the bolt. The leading protrusion interacts with the shaped groove of the bolt carrier. The capsule is heated by a striker, which is located inside the bolt of the OSV-96 sniper rifle. Charging the weapon is carried out by pulling the bolt carrier back to failure and a sharp forward direction.

Checking the quality of shooting from OSV-96

Checking the performance characteristics of the OSV-96 is carried out with ammunition from one batch. A standard aiming mechanism or installed optics for night or day shooting (depending on the time of day) is used. The principle of setting up the built-in mechanical sight is described in the technical documentation of the weapon, which is included in each kit.

To assess the accuracy, a standard target is used: a black rectangle on a white background. Its dimensions are 25x37 centimeters. It is necessary to place the rectangle at a height equal to the level of the shooter's eyes. The aiming point is the center of the bottom line of the black rectangle. The control point is the center of the target.

We carried out testing at a distance of 100 meters. The whole has been moved to the fourth position. The position of the shooter is lying with a bipod with the butt resting on the shoulder. Four shots are fired in a rectangle. Normal indicators of accuracy - the dispersion of shots does not exceed 15 centimeters. If the value is greater, you must fire four shots at the new target.

If the result is satisfactory, the midpoint of impact must be determined. The two nearest shots are connected by a line, the length is divided into two equal parts. Connect the hole from the third shot to this point, divide the resulting segment into three equal pieces. From the point closest to the first two hits, a line is drawn to the fourth hole, the segment is divided into four equal parts. The point that is closest to the rest of the first three hits is considered the midpoint of the hit.

What conclusion can be drawn about the OSV-96 rifle?

OSV-96 Burglar is able to neutralize lightly armored vehicles located at a distance of 1.8 kilometers. If an enemy soldier in a bulletproof vest is in cover and the distance to him does not exceed one kilometer, he can be neutralized with this sniper rifle. The main advantage of the weapon is its excellent accuracy for the set rate of fire.

It entered service in the late 90s of the last century. The power structures of our country are used to resolve armed conflicts within the country and neutralize terrorist groups around the world. It has been used by soldiers in the Syrian civil war for the past two years.

In 1994, the Instrument Design Bureau (Tula) created a 12.7-mm V-94 self-loading rifle. After modifications, the B-94 sniper rifle was put into service under the designation OSV-96.

The OSV-96 large-caliber sniper rifle is designed to solve general tactical sniper tasks (defeat manpower protected by personal body armor, lightly armored vehicles, defense of coasts from small vessels, detonation of sea mines), as an anti-sniper (defeat enemy snipers) or sabotage (disable Radar, rocket and artillery installations, aviation equipment in parking lots). The OSV-96 rifle is self-loading.

The mechanism is gas-operated, locking is carried out by turning the bolt directly behind the barrel, which allows you to unload the receiver and make it fold around the front end, immediately behind the barrel attachment point. Folding is necessary, since in combat readiness the rifle has a very long length and is inconvenient for storage and transportation .Reduced recoil when firing is achieved through the installation of an effective muzzle brake and shock-absorbing butt pad.

The rifle barrel is equipped with a long muzzle brake - a flame arrester.

The bipod is mounted on a special console fixed in the front (folding together with the barrel) part of the receiver.
The stock has a rubber cushion.

The rifle is not intended for hand-held shooting and does not have a forend. The rifle is equipped with POS 12x50 or PKN-05 sights. At the same time, the OSV-96 can be equipped with various optical and night sights.

Shooting at night at a distance of up to 600 m is carried out with an electro-optical sight. A magazine for five rounds and automatic reloading allow, if necessary, to fire at a high rate.

The OSV-96 sniper rifle is mainly used by the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the FSB. In addition, the rifle is offered to all interested domestic and foreign buyers - various state power structures.

The creation of large-caliber sniper rifles was caused by the need to solve a number of tasks, such as the destruction of manpower at a great distance in armor, disabling enemy armored vehicles and many others.

History

Russian weapon - OSV-96 "Cracker" - the first domestically produced rifle in its class. It was developed at the Tula design bureau by the gunsmith A.G. Shipunov in 1990. They took the V-94 Volga rifle, already created at that time, by the same Tula KBP, as a basis.

OSV-96 was put into service in mid-2000. Is pride small arms Russian sniper type.

sniper rifle OSV-96 "Cracker", appearance

It is in service with almost all special units of power structures Russian Federation... It is imported to the CIS allies - Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, as well as to India.

Design features

The design feature of the new weapon can be called the fact that locking is carried out for the rifle barrel. This makes it possible to fold it almost in half when carrying it. When folded, the holes in the barrel and receiver are blocked from contamination.

  • The bipod and the handle for carrying the rifle are attached to the barrel.
  • OSV-96 - self-loading, reloading is carried out due to powder gases.
  • On the barrel, closer to the receiver, bipods are installed, which are fixed movably so that the rifle can change the line of fire both horizontally and vertically. The bipod can also be adjusted in height.
  • The fire is conducted with the standard cartridge SPTs-12.7, armor-piercing and incendiary B-32, BZT, BS.
  • There is a fairly long reactive flame arrestor. The length is due to the strong recoil of the rifle.
  • Optical and night sights are installed.

Main technical characteristics firearms OSV-96

Appointment

According to the declared characteristics, the rifle can stop lightly armored vehicles at a distance of up to 1800 meters, and a soldier in a bulletproof vest who is in cover - up to 1000 meters. Moreover, with enough fast speed shooting, good accuracy is maintained. This just allows you to quickly disable equipment or even just sow panic among the enemy.

Application

OSV-96 accepted its baptism of fire even before the official introduction into service. She began her journey in the version of the Volga firearms and from 1996 to 2000 underwent constant modernization. In addition to armed conflicts and anti-terrorist operations on the territory of the Russian Federation, the "Cracker" managed to take part in the civil war in Syria.

Outcomes

The rifle fully characterized itself only with positive side not only by the Russian military, but also by specialists from foreign states. However, like all weapons, they have their drawbacks. But there are few of them. The main one is a very loud shot. Wear headphones when shooting. This also significantly affects the shooter's stealth. Another is that you can only shoot by leaning against the bipod. And they are mounted on the barrel, which reduces the angle of fire without moving the bipod themselves.

OSV-96 "Cracker" is a heavy self-loading large-caliber sniper rifle. The prototype, the B-94 Volga, was developed by the Tula Instrument Design Bureau in the early 1990s and first shown in 1994. The main differences between the OSV-96 and the prototype are the design of the muzzle brake, the shape of the butt and the carrying handle. Currently, the V-94 and OSV-96 rifles are in service with the special forces of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the FSB and other power departments of Russia.

Construction [edit]

Sniper rifle OSV-96 "Cracker"

The rifle is self-loading, the automation works by removing powder gases from the bore, locking is carried out by turning the bolt with 4 lugs directly behind the barrel, which allows unloading the receiver and making it fold around the front end, immediately behind the barrel attachment point. Folding is necessary because the rifle is very long in combat readiness and is inconvenient to store and transport (while the breech section of the barrel and the receiver overlap to prevent clogging). The rifle barrel is equipped with a long muzzle brake - a flame arrester. The rifle is equipped with a bipod mounted on a special console attached to the front (folding together with the barrel) part of the receiver. They allow you to rotate it relative to the barrel in the longitudinal plane, so that the rifle can be used on any surface. However, the bipod (like the carry handle) is attached directly to the barrel, which does not in the best way affect the accuracy of shooting. The stock is made of wood and has a rubber shock-absorbing cushion, the length and height are not adjustable. The rifle is not designed for hand-held shooting and does not have a forend. OSV-96 can be equipped with various optical and night sights.

Purpose and performance characteristics [edit]

The rifle is designed to engage lightly armored and unarmored targets at distances up to 1500 m, as well as enemy personnel behind shelters and in personal protective equipment at distances up to 1000 m.When firing sniper cartridges at a distance of 100 m in series of 4-5 shots, the dispersion diameter does not exceed 50 mm (for SVD, this indicator is about 1.5 times worse). Initial energy bullets when fired from the OSV-96 exceeds that of the SVD by about 5 times and is about 18860 J.

One of the disadvantages of the rifle is that the sound of the shot is too loud, as a result of which it is recommended to fire with headphones.
