Large-caliber air rifles are the oldest representatives of mechanical pneumatics, which began their way back in 1550. The Royal Danish Museum houses a rifle body with a trigger mechanism, dated by historians in 1603, and its design is so thoughtful that it is close to perfection. In general, such rifles were very popular until the First World War, but soon after it began, they practically disappeared.

The second stage in the development of large-caliber smooth-bore air rifles was the early 1990s, their caliber was approximately 51, and the barrels were made of nickel-plated brass. The speed of a shot from such a gun increased at that moment from 150 m / s, which was too low even for hunting birds, to 360 m / s - and with this indicator, the rifle immediately becomes a serious hunting tool.

Asian rifles also hit the scene in the 1990s, but although the name suggests a Large Caliber 44 combination, the actual barrel diameter was 0.457 inches. There were several varieties of rifles, for example the 9mm lever-action Ultra, which only accepted very short 9mm bullets. Or Career Dragon Slayer caliber .50

Of course, the Benjamin Rogue .357 contributor to the large-caliber rifle range shouldn't be forgotten! But today's review is devoted to Dragon claw from Sam Yang - 50 caliber air rifle. According to the specifications, its muzzle energy is estimated at 312 J - this will need to be checked with special care.

Sam Yang Dragon Claw .50 appearance

Dragon Claw - pneumatic rifle 50 caliber with pre-pumping and single-shot mode. It has a sliding breech for charging bullets - a great design that allows you to use just about any ammunition you can find. The stock and forend are very beautiful shape made of walnut, and on both sides of the forend and pistol grip are laser-cut notches. What can I say, but Asia knows a lot about beautiful woodworking!

Wood for the butt highest quality and gives an unforgettable level of comfort

The butt is rather large - it is intended rather for an adult. The fore-end is long, narrow with a rectangular profile - it is very comfortable to hold it. On the underside of the forearm is a pressure gauge that displays the pressure in the air reservoir. True, it is not entirely clear which numbers it shows - the foreign calibration affects. But pressure is easy to follow just by looking at the color of the sectors.

There is a small pressure gauge at the bottom of the forearm, so you always know what the pressure is in the tank.

The metal is shiny, deep black, polished like u. Receiver - non-ferrous metal, engraved in a circle. Overall, Dragon Claw has a top-notch appearance, in profile it looks more like a shotgun than a rifle.

The weight of the rifle is 3.4 kg., I.e. it is quite light, but it means that the recoil from it will be sensitive. And the manufacturer also carefully added a thread to the front of the barrel - as if there were few other reasons to arrest you with such a rifle in the city without it. I'm even afraid to imagine what permits and licenses are needed in our country for the official acquisition of this rifle.

Power Sam Yang Dragon Claw .50

The rifle has two levels of firing power: push the bolt lever back one click - here's a low firing power, another click further - high.

So, stop ... Low power? Who needs it at all on a large-caliber rifle? I will, of course, test this mode, just to satisfy your curiosity, but ... I think it is completely useless here.

In terms of the complexity of the layout, these Asian rifles will not deliver any unpleasant surprises. They have a fairly simple design of the opening valve, but very reliable - withstands many stroke cycles.

Among the round lead bullets, I only liked the 0.495 caliber bullets, which are used in most 50 caliber firearms, which I plan to use in my Dragon Claw to see how they behave, although it will most likely require a couple of evenings.

The rifle comes with a quick-release air tank and I can finally say that Koreans have kept pace with the rest of the world - the thread of the nozzle of their adapter fits a standard ⅛ inch socket. This is a great success, because previously, in order to load such a rifle, it was necessary to have a hose with the necessary adapter. In general, I advise when buying a Dragon Claw (especially if this is your first pneumatics) to also purchase a Quick-Disconnect male adapter and build it into the rifle's reservoir - this way you will get compatibility with almost all refueling modules.

Oh, and one more thing about air: the rifle uses it up very quickly. I get about four full-force shots or eight low-power shots, and each time the pressure drops from 200 bar to 100 or even 80. This is, in principle, a good amount for a rifle of this caliber, but be prepared for frequent refueling. And do not think that the hand pump will help you out - it is not!

The simpler, the better, I thought, and decided to test the rifle at the training ground, using only open sights so far. Then I found out that from 50 meters the rifle sends bullets much lower than the aiming point! Yes, so low that I could not match the point of impact of the bullet and the scope. Well, well, but now, when mounting the optics, I will adjust the position of the mounts in advance. Taking into account the fact that I changed the bullets and power settings along the way, the accuracy of the rifle turned out to be very decent. Of the 25 shots I fired, about 21 hit an area the size of a palm, though all were past the target.

At the very beginning of the review, I was skeptical about the reduced power mode, but now I understand what it is for. Taking, for example, spherical lead 13 gr. Air Venturi, I was able to fire eight good shots at low power - and they all hit exactly where I expected. I will definitely try this mode with optics.

In this mode, 13 gr. the bullet produces about 182 m / s - or about 215 J of muzzle energy - for eight shots. In high power mode, only four of the total number of shots came out well. 13 gr. the bullet issued an average of 195 m / s - about 247 J of muzzle energy. Quite good performance.

Ball-shaped bullets - Hornady with a diameter of 0.495 inches did not behave very well: the speed is only 142 m / s, from which we can conclude that they are loosely seated in the barrel. Due to its low weight - only 11.8 grams. - muzzle energy is equal to 120 J. It is clear that the expansion eventually came out too large - almost 15 cm.

Sam Yang Dragon Claw First Impressions .50

The Dragon Claw has a very tight trigger - you need to apply a force of about 3.6 kg to it! Recoil is comparable to that of a lightweight Magnum rifle in .22 or even a Special in .38.

You can cock the rifle by pulling back the bolt lever associated with the trigger. While the rifle is new, it is quite tight and requires a fair amount of skill to choose between low and high power modes.

Let's try to draw intermediate conclusions. The rifle is comfortable, has an excellent power reserve and its price is within reasonable limits. So far, I like everything, let's see what shooting with a telescopic sight will bring us in the future.

Shooting with a telescopic sight from the Sam Yang Dragon Claw .50

In the beginning, I had no intention of firing this rifle with open sights as it has such a convenient optics bracket on the receiver, but I still tested them, just for fun. To do this, I did not even have to rearrange the target: the excellent power allowed me to shoot from the same distance as if I had used optics - 50 meters. But even with the rear fully raised, the rifle still sent bullets 15 cm below the aiming point. So it's time to move on to the telescopic sight.

An AirForce 4-16x50AO scope was used for the test. It should be noted that Dragon Claw has a fairly strong recoil, which not every no-name scope can withstand, so be careful when choosing optics.

In low power mode, bullets 13 gr. the spread was about 18 cm.With the same bullets, in the high power mode, the spread was already about 10 cm.

Yes, though large bore rifles and are not famous for their good accuracy, but I still cannot note that Dragon Claw, even against the background of the others, shows unsatisfactory results. While trying to figure out this problem, I used a special barrel cleaner - so that nothing would interfere with the bullet - and yet I was not sure if that was the reason. Therefore, for now, I propose to understand how a bullet is, in principle, loaded into a rifle.

It should be noted that the bullet does not sit tightly in place. When loading the rifle, I simply pushed it with my finger into the breech - quite possibly not deep enough.

Then, of course, I will use a special tool for placing bullets in the breech - as deep as possible. Hopefully this solves the problem of lack of precision. Tests will show. And until I am convinced of the correct charging, I am not going to draw conclusions about which mode is more accurate - high or low power.

I took two types of bullets for the test - lead Air Venturi with a hemispherical head, weighing 13 and 14.5 grams. This time, I very carefully loaded each bullet into the rifle, using an Allen mid-size wrench, which, incidentally, proved to be excellent. I pushed the bullets with great care and to the very end, until they hit the limiter.

Shooting in low power mode:

Five shots 13 gr. Air Venturi. Spread - 10.6 cm

Five shots of Air Venturi, but now 14.5 grams. The spread is 13 cm.

And here are the results in high power mode from the same 50 meters:

13 gr. bullet and high power - best result in the test! The spread is 8.4 cm.

14.5 g bullet in high power mode - and again improved! Spread 9.5 cm.

Conclusions on the Sam Yang Dragon Claw .50 air rifle

Is Dragon Claw right for you? The answer to this question depends on what you expect from your large air rifle. Its differences from the small-bore are of the cardinal status and you must take into account absolutely everything in order to make a decision. Don't think that the Dragon Claw can be a “for all occasions” hunting rifle. The best accuracy at a distance of 50 meters in a series of three shots was 8.4 cm. - the result is comparable to bullet shooting from hunting smooth-bore rifles of 12-16 calibers, but the recoil is the same as that of a small-bore rifle.
We did not try to shoot with the Dragon Claw at 100 meters, but from the results obtained, we can assume that at such distances, shooting can only be carried out at a growth target.
