Large-caliber air rifle Sam Yang Dragon Claw.50. Weapon Dragon Claw Dragon Claw weapon

Large-caliber air rifles are the oldest representatives of mechanical pneumatics, which began their journey as early as 1550. The Royal Danish Museum has a rifle body with a trigger mechanism, dated by historians to 1603, and its design is so well thought out that it is close to perfection. In general, such rifles were very popular until the First World War, but soon after it began, they practically disappeared.

The second stage in the development of large-caliber smoothbore air rifles - the beginning of 1990, their caliber was approximately .51, and the barrels were made of nickel-plated brass. The speed of a shot from such a gun increased at that moment from 150 m / s, which was too low even for bird hunting, to 360 m / s - and with this indicator, the rifle immediately goes into the category of serious hunting tools.

Asian rifles also came on the scene in the 1990s, but even though they had the combination Big Caliber 44 in their name, the actual barrel diameter was 0.457 inches. There were several varieties of rifles, such as the 9mm Ultra lever-cocked rifle, which only accepted very short 9mm bullets. Or the Career Dragon Slayer in .50

Of course, don't forget to contribute to the large caliber rifle range with their Benjamin Rogue .357 model! But our review today is dedicated to Dragon Claw from Sam Yang- air rifle caliber.50. According to the specifications, its muzzle energy is estimated at 312 J - this will have to be checked with great care.

Appearance of Sam Yang Dragon Claw .50

The Dragon Claw is a 50 caliber air rifle with preload and single shot mode. It has a sliding breech for loading bullets - a great design that allows you to use almost any suitable ammunition. Buttstock and handguard are very beautiful shape, made of walnut, and on both sides of the forearm and pistol grip are laser-cut notches. What can I say, but Asians know a lot about beautiful woodworking!

Wood for the butt highest quality and provides an unforgettable level of comfort

The butt is quite large - it is intended more for an adult. The forearm is long, narrow with a rectangular profile - it is very comfortable to hold it. On the underside of the forearm is a pressure gauge that displays the pressure in the air reservoir. True, it is not entirely clear what kind of numbers it shows - foreign calibration affects. But the pressure is easy to follow, just focusing on the color of the sectors.

At the bottom of the forearm is a small pressure gauge, so you always know what pressure is in the tank.

The metal is shiny, deep black, polished like a. The receiver is made of non-ferrous metal, engraved in a circle. Overall, Dragon Claw has a top-notch appearance, in profile it looks more like a shotgun than a rifle.

The weight of the rifle is 3.4 kg, i.e. it is quite light, but this means that the feedback from it will be sensitive. And the manufacturer also carefully added a thread to the front of the barrel - as if without this there are few other reasons to arrest you with such a rifle in the city. I’m even afraid to imagine what permits and licenses we need in our country to officially purchase this rifle

Power Sam Yang Dragon Claw .50

The rifle has two levels of shot power: pull the bolt back one click - that's low shot power for you, another click further - high.

So stop… Low power? Who needs it at all on a large-caliber rifle? Of course, I will test this mode, just to satisfy your curiosity, but ... I think it is completely useless here.

In terms of the complexity of the layout, these Asian rifles will not deliver unpleasant surprises. They have a fairly simple design of the opening valve, but very reliable - it can withstand many stroke cycles.

Among the round lead bullets, the only .495 caliber bullets that I liked for testing, which are used in most firearms of 50 caliber firearms. I plan to use them in my Dragon Claw to see how they behave, although it will most likely require spending a couple evenings.

The rifle comes with a quick air reservoir refill and finally I can say that the Koreans have kept up with the rest of the world - the nozzle thread of their adapter fits the standard ⅛ inch socket. This is a great success, because. previously, in order to load such a rifle, it was necessary to have a hose with the right adapter. In general, when buying a Dragon Claw (especially if this is your first pneumatic), I advise you to also purchase a Quick-Disconnect male adapter and build it into the rifle tank - this way you will get compatibility with almost all filling modules.

Oh, and one more thing about air: the rifle consumes it very quickly. I fire about four full-power shots or eight low-power shots, and each time the pressure dropped from 200 atm to 100 or even 80. This, in principle, is not a bad amount for a rifle of this caliber, but be prepared for frequent refueling. And do not think that a hand pump will help you out - it is not!

The simpler the better, I thought, and decided to test the rifle at the range, using only open sights so far. Then I found out that from 50 meters the rifle sends bullets far below the aiming point! Yes, so low that I could not combine the point of impact of the bullet and the scope. Well, well, but now, when mounting the optics, I will adjust the position of the mounts in advance. Taking into account the fact that I changed bullets and power settings along the way, the accuracy of the rifle turned out to be very decent. Of the 25 shots I fired, about 21 hit an area the size of a palm, but they all missed the target.

At the very beginning of the review, I was skeptical about the reduced power mode, but now I understand what it is for. Taking, for example, spherical lead 13 gr. Air Venturi, I was able to get eight good shots at low power and they all landed exactly where I intended. With optics, I will definitely try this mode.

In this mode, 13 gr. the bullet puts out about 182 m/s - or about 215 joules of muzzle energy - with eight shots. In high power mode, only four out of the total number of shots came out good. 13 gr. the bullet delivered an average of 195 m / s - approximately 247 J of muzzle energy. Good indicators.

The 0.495 inch Hornady spherical bullets didn't perform very well: only 142 m/s, from which we can conclude that they do not sit tightly in the barrel. Due to the low weight - only 11.8 grams. - the muzzle energy is 120 J. It is clear that the expansion ended up being too large - almost 15 cm.

First impressions of the Sam Yang Dragon Claw .50

The Dragon Claw has a very tight trigger - you need to apply a force of about 3.6 kg to it! The recoil is comparable to that of a light .22 Magnum rifle or even a .38 Special.

You can cock the rifle by pulling back the bolt lever associated with the firing mechanism. When the rifle is new, it is quite tight and requires a fair amount of skill to choose between low and high power modes.

Let's try to draw intermediate conclusions. The rifle is comfortable, has excellent power reserves and is reasonably priced. So far, I like everything, let's see what shooting with a telescopic sight will bring us in the future.

Shooting with a telescopic sight from the Sam Yang Dragon Claw .50

At first, I had no intention of shooting this rifle with open sights - it has such a convenient mount for optics on the receiver, but I still tried them out, just for fun. To do this, I didn’t even have to rearrange the target: excellent power allowed me to shoot from the same distance as if I were using optics - 50 meters. But even with the rear fully raised to the maximum, the rifle still sent bullets 15 cm below the aiming point. So it's time to move on to the optical sight.

For the test, the AirForce 4-16x50AO scope was used. It should be noted that the Dragon Claw has quite a strong recoil that not every no-name sight can withstand, so be careful when choosing an optic.

In low power mode, bullets 13 gr. the spread was about 18 cm. With the same bullets, in high power mode, the spread was already about 10 cm.

Yes, at least large-caliber rifles and are not famous for good accuracy, but still I can’t say that Dragon Claw, even against the background of the rest, shows unsatisfactory results. Trying to figure out this problem, I used a special barrel cleaner - so that nothing would interfere with the bullet - and still I was not sure if this was the reason. Therefore, for now, I propose to figure out how a bullet is, in principle, loaded into a rifle.

It should be noted that the bullet does not fit tightly into place. When loading the rifle, I simply pushed it with my finger into the breech - quite possibly not deep enough.

Next, of course, I will use a special tool to put the bullets in the breech - as deep as possible. Hopefully, this will solve the problem of insufficient accuracy. Tests will show. And until I am convinced of the correct charging, I am not going to draw conclusions about which mode is more accurate - high or low power.

I took two types of bullets for the test - lead Air Venturi with a hemispherical head, weighing 13 and 14.5 grams. This time, I very carefully loaded each bullet into the rifle, using a medium-sized Allen wrench, which, by the way, performed perfectly. I pushed the bullets with great care and to the very end, until they rested on the limiter.

Shooting in low power mode:

Five shots 13 gr. Air Venturi. Spread - 10.6 cm

Five shots of Air Venturi, but now 14.5 gr. Spread - 13 cm.

And here are the results in high power mode from the same 50 meters:

13 gr. bullet and high power - best result in the test! Spread 8.4 cm.

14.5 gr. bullet in high power mode - and again an improvement! Spread 9.5 cm.

Conclusions on the air rifle Sam Yang Dragon Claw .50

Is Dragon Claw right for you? The answer to this question depends on what you expect from a large-caliber air rifle. Its differences from the small-caliber ones are cardinal and you must take into account absolutely everything in order to make a decision. Don't think that the Dragon Claw can become an "all-purpose" hunting rifle. The best accuracy at a distance of 50 meters in a series of three shots turned out to be 8.4 cm. - The result is comparable to bullet shooting from hunting smoothbore guns of 12-16 calibers, but the recoil is like that of a small-caliber rifle.
We haven't tried shooting the Dragon Claw at 100 meters, but from the results we've got, we can assume that at such distances you can only shoot at a tall target.
