The XXVI World Championship in modern pentathlon among men 1982 was held in the capital of Italy, Rome.

After the 1960 Olympics, Italy hosted pentathletes for the first time. The championship was attended by 58 athletes from 21 countries. Olympic champions Anatoly Starostin and Janusz Pechak (Poland), silver medalist of the 76 Olympics Jan Bartu (Czechoslovakia), 1979 world champion Robert Niemann (USA) and other titled athletes met here again.

According to the results of the qualifying starts, the USSR national team was represented by Olympic champions Anatoly Starostin, Evgeny Lipeyev and debutant Timur Dosymbetov. The head coach of the team is Gleb Georgievich Kryukov. The unprecedented failure of the Soviet team at the 1981 World Championships in Zielona Gora (Poland) forced a lot to rethink and thoroughly prepare for the Roman championship in order to return to the lost positions. Together with the team of the Soviet Union, two days before the start, a group of tourists arrived in Rome to provide moral support to the athletes.

Two days before the start of the championship, everyone was given the opportunity to attend a control pulling in of horses, at which the international jury was to select 35 out of 49 horses. Here, the audience witnessed a phenomenon unique in its kind. Former Olympic Games member Sergio Albanese for the Italian Equestrian Team during four o'clock drove 40 horses along the control route, making up to 800 jumps and covering a distance of 24 km. All horses under his saddle had a score of 1000 points or more. However, this circumstance, as shown by the competition, revealed the erroneousness of this approach to checking the horse population.

Show jumping

The show jumping competition was held in a colorful stadium with 15 obstacles, including double and triple systems. The distance was 600 m. The horses started in two rounds. Pentathletes, not possessing such high horse management skills as professional groom Sergio Albanese, could not find effective techniques to overcome parkour. The maximum amount of 1100 points was received only by 4 athletes, 6 people, including the Olympic champion of Montreal Pechak, had a zero score in the first type of the program.

In the first round, Dosymbetov performed at the Kadilak. He overcame the route with composure and prudence, but the starting excitement still led to falls on the first and second obstacles. As a result, 1040 points.

In the second round, three horses were removed and replaced with spare horses. One of them went to Lipeev by lot. Already during the warm-up, it became clear that it requires constant control and an active message. The coach of the team, Andrei Andreevich Aleutdinov, tried to inspire the athlete with confidence that he was able to cope with the horse. However, excessive fuss and nervousness led him to six fellings. In addition, the control time is 11 seconds overdue and the scoreboard is only 898 points. Starostin got a horse, on which the Brazilian Spies brought 840 points in the first round. During the warm-up, she made two refunds, was poorly controlled and, despite a very active message and the use of a whip, it was very difficult to send her to an obstacle. By the time of the start, a downpour gushed, so Starostin was driving not in his usual collected and calculating manner, but much faster. This allowed him to avoid refusals, but there were many fellings. The result is 948 points.

Departure to the jumping field of Masala on a horse named Roma was greeted with a general ovation. In the first gita, the Mexican Mechaka made four fellings on it. This fueled public interest. The athlete's claims for a medal of the highest standard were also obvious. From the first to the last hurdle, Masala did not make a single mistake. To the applause of his compatriots, bowing to the audience for support, the athlete left the arena. The maximum amount of points that day was received by three more: Canadian Kenedy, Mexican Heo and French Fur.

In the team event, the top three from Hungary (Chasari - 1070 points, Mijer - 1070, Payor - 990), followed by the team of Mexico - 3146 and Italy - 3090 points. The USSR national team took 5th place.

Fencing

The organizers urgently moved the fencing competition from the Sports Palace to the hall of the Hilton Hotel for superstitious reasons. The fact is that the day before, the Soviet fencer, Olympic champion Vladimir Smirnov, died there. In a fight with a foil fencer from Germany, a broken blade pierced the athlete's head through a mask. The pentathletes spent almost 10 hours on the fencing tracks.

The Soviet team had number 1 by lot and fenced on the same lane. After a relative failure on horseback, it was here that everything had to be decided. Fencing has long become the cornerstone of wrestling in modern pentathlon, because only in this form, winning, you take points away from your opponent. The fights continued all day. The start did not inspire much hope. The first meeting with the pentathletes of the FRG, the Soviet team lost with a score of 2: 7, then, after defeating the Finnish national team, it was again defeated in a meeting with the US team - 3: 6. This disheartened a group of Soviet tourists. To inspire their compatriots on the fencing track, following the example of the Italian fans, the Soviet fans began to chorus support each successful attack of the Soviet guys. Having got a taste after the victory of Timur Dosymbetov, they chanted: "Tim, young man, young boy, Timosha!" Whether it helped or not, the team won victory after victory in the next fifteen meetings. At the same time, they defeated the most powerful rivals - Hungary 7: 2, Sweden 8: 1, Italy 5: 4, France 5: 4, Poland 5: 3. At the end of this grueling ordeal, the cheerleaders went hoarse and the team reclaimed almost everything they had lost in show jumping. Dossymbetov scored 38 victories and got 962 points, Starostin - 924, Lipeyev - 905 points. With these indicators, the Soviet team took 2nd place in fencing after the French (3000 points) and moved to 4th place in terms of the sum of the two types.

Individual and team victories went to the French (Fur_Yu76, Buzu - 1000, Bube - 924). The Italians were third (Masala - 1019, Petroni - 962, Cristofori - 791).

The Hungarians fenced weaker than expected, over whom Mijer won only 24 fights, which threw the team to 5th place. Achim Belman from Germany could not stand the tension. He was broken by a failure in horseback riding, and he lost five victories to the winner. In the Polish national team, Pechak, after a zero mark in the first event of the program, withdrew from the competition due to illness, and his place in the team was taken by a reserve participant D. Kondrat. However, without a leader, the athletes' fencing looked pale, and they shared 7th and 8th places with the Finnish national team.

Swimming

V swimming pool the West German pentathlete Christian Sandow won - 3 minutes 14.7 seconds, the second was Ivar Sisniega from Mexico - 3 minutes 17.1 seconds, the third - Daniele Masala 3 minutes 18.6 seconds.

The Soviet team performed at the planned level in this type of program. Starostin and Dosymbetov showed record results for themselves 3 minutes 26.7 seconds and 3 minutes 36.6 seconds, respectively. Lipeyev improved his last year's result by 2 seconds - 3 minutes 27.7 seconds.

The team results of the voyage looked like this: USA - 3756, Germany - 3644, Hungary - 3640, Great Britain - 3600, USSR - 3572 points.

Analysis of the results in swimming showed that there was a significant increase in this type. Out of 58 participants, 53 had the result of more than 1000 points, and the strongest pentathletes in the world improved their performance compared to 1981: Masala (Italy) - by 3 seconds, Barley (USA), Payor (Hungary) - by 5, Hulkonen (Finland) - by 7, Sandow (FRG) - by 8 seconds.

At the end of three days, the Soviet team won back 184 points against the Italians.

Shooting

The first of the Soviet troika to shoot was Lipeyev. After a breakdown at the Olympics in Moscow, he confirmed his high class at the previous World Championship - 199 points, and at the spring international tournament in the same shooting range he won the competition with a score of 200 points. However, in the aggravated situation, when the fate of victory depended on each shot, the athlete could not cope with his nerves. In three series, he made two nines, in the end, only 194 points.

Dossymbetov, starting with 49 points, did not make a single failure in the other three series, the result was 199 points.

Starostin, shortly before the championship, switched to a new pistol, the process of getting used to which occurred just during this period. Therefore, his shooting was uneven (50, 48, 50, 49) and one point less than the average result of the season.

In general, the performance of the team in the shooting exercise was considered successful. Having taken 2nd place after the Swedes, the Soviet national team was ahead of the Italians by 3 points, the Hungarians by 7 points before the race.

They showed good results in the shooting range. Three competitors achieved 199 points, five - 198, four - 197, six - 196 and five - 194. For the first time in the history of championships, the jury had to resort to measuring the distance of the hole from the center of the target to determine the winner in shooting, since all the parameters of the three shooters coincided. On the basis of this indicator, P. Santanen (Finland) was recognized as the winner, the nine of which was at a distance of 70 mm, the second T. Dosymbetov (USSR) - 84 mm, the third R. Niemann (USA) - 88 mm.

The Swedes received congratulations on the team victory in the shooting (Danielson - 1088, Horvat - 1066, Rasmusson - 1044 points).

Individual championship. Position after four types of pentathlon.

  1. Masala (Italy) - 4491 points
  2. Niemann (USA) - 4253
  3. Dossymbetov (USSR) - 4252

Cross

The track and field cross and the post-competition awards ceremony were held in the picturesque park of Villa Borghese. According to experts, the track was prepared perfectly. Its great advantage is its spectacularity. From the stands of the stadium, it was possible to observe the progress of the struggle in several sections, and the last 600 meters of the athletes ran in front of the stands.

The insignificant advantage of the Soviet team over the main rivals required maximum volitional and physical exertion to hold the first position in the team struggle. Dosymbetov and Starostin had real chances to claim silver and bronze medals in the individual championship.

Olympic champion Starostin did an excellent job. He ran in 12 minutes 44 seconds and moved from 8th place to second, Lipeev showed 12 minutes 55 seconds and rose from 16th to 12th place. Dossymbetov's run is not the best strong look complex, but if he kept the speed on the first kilometer, he could keep the third position. But the athlete fell into a trap. The first kilometer went downhill, which tempted inexperienced pentathletes to increase their running speed on this segment. Dossymbetov, showing a high result at the 2 km mark, ended up finishing the distance very mediocre - in 13 minutes 27 seconds, moving to fourth place in total.

Having a solid supply of points, Masala did not leave any hope for victory to his rivals. He scored a record amount for the championships and the Olympic Games - 5680 points, although in cross-country he showed only the 19th result. His run along the live corridor of fans from the first to the last meter was accompanied by jubilant, encouraging greetings from temperamental compatriots, whose expectations he lived up to.

Due to excellent seconds in the running, Joel Bouzou from France climbed to the third step of the podium.

In cross, like a year ago, the team of Polish pentathletes won - 3753 points (Olesinski - 1297, Shuba - 1240, Kondrat - 1216). Reputation best runner confirmed by Mike Barley from the USA (1336 points), the second was Alex Watson from Australia (1324), the third was the Czech Milan Kadlec (1309 points).

V team competition in the first place the Soviet trio - 16082 points, the second - for the Hungarian national team (Payor - 5394, Chasari - 5342, Mijer - 5276 points). The Italian team was let down by Paolo Cristofori. As the strongest runner in the national team, he ran very poorly. As a result, the Italians received bronze medals.

Congratulating the Soviet athletes on their victory, the head of the applied sports department of the USSR Sports Committee, Oleg Chuvilin, said that after the Olympics, Starostin had to forget about his Olympic success and start all over again. Now he is glad that the pentathlete succeeded. After the failure at the World Championships in Zielona Gora in 1981, the athlete worked hard, especially in running, and this allowed him to approach the 2500 points mark in the final combined event - the foundation, without which one cannot count on success today.

TASS, September 7. The next world championship in modern pentathlon starts on September 7 in Mexico City. Within the framework of the tournament, seven sets of awards will be played, but the most titled pentathlete of the last decade, Russian Alexander Lesun, will not be among the applicants, who, by decision coaching staff the national team was forced to stay at home.

The World Modern Pentathlon Championships will be held in Mexico City for the fourth time. In 1962, domestic athletes performed excellently, winning gold in both the individual (Eduard Sdobnikov) and team (Sdobnikov, Igor Novikov and Valery Pichuzhkin) championships. The 1975 World Cup was also successful for the USSR national team: Pavel Lednev became the first in the individual tournament, he, together with Vladimir Shmelev and Leonid Ivanov, won bronze in the team competition. World championship 1998 did not bring domestic pentathletes a single championship award.

A week before the start of the 2018 World Cup Main coach Russian national team Andrei Moiseev announced the composition for this tournament. The men's team included Kirill Belyakov, Sergey Baranov, Alexander Savkin, Alexander Lifanov, Yegor Puchkarevsky and Oleg Naumov. The leader of the national team, Olympic champion Alexander Lesun, by the decision of the coaching staff will be forced to miss main start season. The 2017 world champion, 26-year-old Gulnaz Gubaidullina, Ulyana Batashova, Ekaterina Khuraskina, Anastasia Vasilyeva, Lyudmila Tebekina, Svetlana Lebedeva and Anna Buryak will take part in the women's competition.

The Russian national team will perform for the first time without Lesun

The main surprise for all Russian fans of modern pentathlon was the absence in the national team Olympic champion 2016 Lesun, who, after moving from Belarus to Russia (since 2010 - approx.TASS), did not miss a single world championship. Over the past eight world championships, this athlete in individual tournaments twice became the first, four times - the second and once - the third.

"By by and large, he is now not ready to perform and as a result of which, probably, he received an injury to the Achilles tendon, - said Moiseev in an interview with a TASS correspondent. - In general, Lesun does not show high results this season. He is now not in those conditions that were inherent in him in previous years. It also gives the impression that Alexander has not yet descended from the Olympic height of Rio de Janeiro. "

The head coach also noted that no one is going to write off Lesun, he remains the leader of the team, and great hopes will be associated with this athlete next season.

"We have a very interesting composition the men's team, including two young athletes - Baranov and Lifanov, - continued Moiseev. - We are very interested to see how they show themselves in Mexico. Kirill Belyakov, on the other hand, has serious experience, and we also pin certain hopes on him. At the same time, we understand that in the absence of leader Alexander Lesun, it will be very difficult to fight for gold in the individual championship. "

“But we will count on the team medal in the men's pentathlon. Olympic Games- 2020 ", - said the head coach.

Gubaidullina is able to defend the world champion title in Mexico City

The 2017 World Championship, which took place in Egypt, was a real breakthrough for the young Russian pentathlete Gubaidullina. Moiseev believes that this athlete in Mexico City may again become the first. “Gubaidullina has every chance to defend her title of world champion. And other girls do not go to Mexico for a walk, but to compete for championship medals,” Moiseev said.

The first medals of the 2018 World Cup will be raffled off on September 7 at women's relay, the next day - in the man's. September 9 will take place mixed relay... The world champion in the individual championship will be determined on September 12, the strongest pentathlete on the planet - on September 13. There will also be medals for the men's and women's team tournaments.
