Which coil is best for the Terra 705 metal detector.

  • Standard coil

The Minelab X-Terra 705 metal detector has rightfully earned itself the fame of one of the most balanced devices both in terms of capabilities and price. A convenient and lightweight device with a good processor performance does nothing to cope with the task of finding old coins. But the realities of the present time are such that this task is becoming more and more difficult - almost all the swagger places have been thoroughly combed.

For this reason, many treasure hunters believe that, as standard, it no longer fully justifies itself.

Some search engines, in this case, consider the only correct decision to change the device, others buy additional coils.
For those who are not so categorical and are not going to sell it, as well as for those who are plagued by doubts about what configuration to order a metal detector, we will tell you which coils are suitable for it, why they are good or bad.

    Standard coil

The seven hundred and fifth is standardly equipped with a 10.5 ″ DD 7.5 kHz coil.

    What does it mean:

10.5 "is the size of the coil in inches,
DD- design feature winding the cable, in this case, the soil is scanned along the entire depth of the coil detection,
    7.5kHz - target detection frequency

The manufacturer stopped his choice on such a configuration for a reason, the fact is that such parameters are averaged, which ultimately determines its versatility.

Here is a small field characteristic of it.

The optimal size allows you to successfully walk both in fields and in not dense vegetation. The detection depth is very decent. The middle frequency works well where there is a thick cushion of grass or where the coins are quite deep.

It tolerates the sensitivity setting to maximum well, does not respond with trills when hitting stones or stubble. It hooks well on small objects (the size of a Soviet penny), and sees large ones deep enough.
The separation of metals is clear.

Of the minuses, she is credited with poor visibility of very small and thin objects (for example, scales) and the skipping of coins standing on the edge.

IN recent times she began to displease many. All the slightest good signals are selected, there are those that are difficult to feel for the device. To find them, coils with other characteristics are acquired.

Despite some of its shortcomings, it still remains quite popular.

    High frequency 10.5 ″ DD 18.75

This coil is similar in shape and size to the previous one. Its only, but at the same time important difference is its high frequency - 18.75 kHz. It allows you to scan the soil in more detail, thereby detecting small targets.

It is her that many treasure hunters consider as an alternative to the midrange. This is especially true in badly knocked out areas and where scales come across.

The existence of generally identical coils with different frequencies has generated a lot of controversy about which one is better.

The manufacturer, releasing these devices, clearly distinguishes them according to their purpose: high-frequency - for searching for small finds, standard - for deep targets and treasures.

But for the sake of objectivity, it should be said that in the fields, the difference between them is sometimes difficult to assess. Many people notice that significant differences in by and large and no. Is that the mid-frequency a little deeper (a couple of cm) clings to coins, and 18.75 finds small coins a little more often.

    Ellipse

Standard 10 "DD coil, elliptical. Produced with one frequency - 18.75 kHz. Designed to search for gold nuggets and small antiques.

The elongated shape and the corresponding frequency quickly found application among search engines. It is most often bought for searching for small coins, for walking on beaches, littered places and during summer grass.

Search engines note that she has a number of advantages over her younger relatives, sniper coils. She sees them deeper, she has a greater search value and, with all this, does not suffer from poor separation of metals.

    6 '' coil

These coils are called snipers in the mining environment, due to their small size and characteristic work during the search for coins.

They are produced in two versions:

    1) Mono 6 ″ 7.5kHz.

    2) DD 6 ″ 18.75kHz.

Although these coils are small and noticeably inferior in efficiency in the fields to ordinary 10-inch and all sorts of "wheels", they have no equal in places where it is, in principle, difficult to search.

I think many have attractive sites, but walking there with a metal detector is considered pointless. Often, village fairs, inns or manor houses are a sad sight. In their place are huge garbage dumps or dumps, which are also abundantly overgrown with bushes, trees and grass. This is where snipers come in handy.

Their small area, which reduces the search efficiency at times, becomes an advantage here. They clearly catch good signals among the metal garbage, "do not go blind" like large coils, crawl between raspberry and weeds bushes, climb into every niche in basements and attics.

In addition to this, they are also lightweight and waterproof.

If you decide to purchase such a little thing, please be patient. Walking with such a thing is quite specific: you need to walk slowly, do the wiring slowly, constantly change the settings, especially the sensitivity and ground balance.

The depth of detection is not high here, but in general it is not as important as the ability to pick out a clear signal among a variety of extraneous targets.

Not everyone is able to feel the difference between Mono and DD, and not everyone will be able to adapt to one of them, it comes only with years and experience. By the nature of the work, in a nutshell, this can be expressed as follows: the mono-coil indicates the target more accurately, and the high-frequency coil determines it better.

It's not uncommon to buy them specifically for beach searches.

    Nel Tornado

This coil is becoming more and more widespread, because have a number of advantages over standard ones. First of all, this is an increased size-12x13 ″, and, accordingly, the scanning area of the soil and a slightly greater target detection depth.

The larger size does not increase the speed of their inspection of areas, because they need to walk slowly with them. This is necessary due to their increased sensitivity and size - the coil with fast wiring will not be able to correctly process the signal. Well, this is a feature of these models, but as for the shortcomings, they are generally obvious: increased phantom, fear of littered places, difficulty in establishing the center of the target and the impossibility of using it in difficult places.

It is used most often on large fields and meadows, where other coils no longer see anything.

    Coiltech

Having appeared recently, she put on a lot of noise in the search engine environment. At first, there was little information about their effectiveness, and not many people dared to purchase them. Who wants to be the first to take the pig in a poke?

But gradually the diggers mastered this subject too. Now such coils or, as they are also called "wheels" or "rudders", are no longer a rarity.

They appeared at one time for a reason, manufacturers quickly realized the need for coils with increased detection depth.

    How good are they?

Coiltek 15 "coils (also available in 6") are available in three versions:

    1. Coiltek DD 15 ″ 3kHz

    2. Coiltek DD 15 ″ 7.5kHz

    3. Coiltek DD 15 ″ 18.75kHz

All three are designed for open area surveying, the larger diameter allows a much larger area to be scanned compared to other coils. At the same time, they reduce the number of gaps because called blind spots, which are often obtained with quick wiring.

Among the shortcomings, we note the mediocre PinPoint performance and weight.

We will especially highlight the three-Hz one, it is the most popular, because it has an increased depth of visibility of the target and it is, depending on various factors, about 3-5 cm. It seems a little, but do not tell me, this is sometimes not enough in order not to pass by.

In theory, the low frequency adds in depth, but at the same time loses in the visibility of small objects. But some of the diggers claim that they often find half of the wpp, 1/2 and 1/4 kopecks, etc.

Of course, it is not for everyday detecting and is best used in addition to others, for example, when completing plowing or walking around knocked out places.

High-frequency will best of all show itself on beaches and in places of plowing of scales.

The medium-frequency one will be slightly inferior in depth to 3 kHz, but at the same time it will be preferable on moderately littered and mineralized soils.

In addition to Koiltek, you can find similar coils from other companies on sale: NEL Storm 13 × 14 ", NEL Attack 15", Mars Goliath 15 ".

It's not by hearsay that you can read and re-read reviews about coils for a whole month and end up completely confused.

Each coil is designed for its own purpose:

    • in landfills, trash cans and foundations, it is best to use snipers,
    • in overgrown villages, on beaches, forests and littered areas, it is good to walk with an ellipse,
    • 10 ″ DD is suitable for vegetable gardens and moderately littered fields,
    • for relatively clean spaces, large Coilteki, NELs and Mars.

And finally, let's say that you should not forget the common truth of the treasure hunter, that it is not a device that is looking for, but a person.

Without a doubt, the Grater 705 is one of the best advanced level devices. If the operator of the metal detector is an experienced digger, then he can easily "make" a less experienced digger with a steeper MD. So I'm lucky to have this gorgeous device at my disposal.

Not so long ago I decided to look for a sniper rifle - a small coil for searching in heavily littered areas. For several times we tried to dig on the foundations of an ordinary 10.5 "DD - these are generally pitchforks, a bunch of" left "signals, it is very difficult to dig, since the coil is large and several objects can simultaneously climb into the working diameter and sometimes it is simply unrealistic to separate their indicators. and you need a sniper. An important note - so that when working with a sniper there are no glitches, set the chuyka not to the maximum, for a grater 705 (20-23).

Have you ever tried to look for the Grater 705 with a standard coil in the attic or in the basement? Even if you haven’t tried it, I’ll say right away - and don’t try. For the cacaphony is simply unreal, it rings everywhere and everywhere. For the size of the coil will simultaneously intervene on the order of 2-10 targets. Pieces of foil, rusty nails, small pieces of aluminum wire, other metal trash - the conclusion here is unambiguous - it is simply unrealistic to look for a 10.5 "coil in the attic. But a sniper 5-6" is what the doctor ordered. It remains only to decide which coil to take.

The next nuance and plus in using a small coil is that it is convenient to dig at any time, even in the summer in the grass up to your waist / up to your ears. When the standard coil does not really crawl between the posts of plants, you can work quite comfortably with a sniper. And yet - it fits more tightly to the ground due to its small size, and therefore the area breaks through more clearly. That is to say - its "streamlining" in relief is several times superior to the standard coil.

When choosing a coil, the following questions arise:

With what frequency to take katuhen?
    - Mono or DD?
    - Ellipse or round?
    - Which is better - mono 9 "or 6" DD?
    - Which company will the device be better and more reliable?

I will briefly state my point of view on all these issues.

What is the best sniper rate?

Frequency - can be 3, 7.5 and 18.75 kHz. I think it will be superfluous to explain. And each frequency is suitable for its own case. But to summarize, the most reviews, of course, are about the high-frequency model - 18.75. Since the sniper itself is designed to thoughtfully pierce small areas, as well as to search for "small things", the high frequency is what is needed and it is she who is so fond of treasure hunters. Here, of course, there will be a loss in depth, but the separability of metals is much better. To admit, how many I did not look for reviews about a sniper with a frequency of 3 KHz, I did not find it, rarely anyone uses them.

If you think like that, a coil with such a frequency will "peel" deep into it very steeply, with such a coil it is possible to most effectively examine the fields pierced by coils of a larger size. Look for knocked-out places with this, if you do not want to spin on 3 square meters, looking for an ear from a cross)) In general, snipers for 3 KHz are for those who do not want to dig a colored trifle, but want to look for normal coins))

But if you know where to look, then another conversation. In general, my opinion is to take only 18.75 (or at least 7.5). A trifle catches at times better, he also sees large targets, but loses a little in depth.

    Mono or DD?

Mono beats with a cone, DD-shka downwards along the entire diameter. So as for me, you need to take DD. And diggers most often use double D coils.

    Ellipse or round?

I read the forums, there are several models of sniper rifles in the form of an ellipse. In size they, of course, will be a little larger and in fact they cannot be called snipers.

Since the shape will be larger in size, then on heavily littered local areas the ellipse will "go blind" more often than a miniature 5 or 6 "coil. 90 percent of diggers agree that an ellipse is ideal for a beach. IMHO I support it.

Or maybe her this 6DD? There is also a mono 9 "!

There is a lot of controversy about the advisability of buying a sniper rifle. Why, if there is a standard 305 - mono 9 "(in the photo - on the left).

Excellent search coil for medium trashy areas. My comrades, by the way, mined one treasure with a monkey and were satisfied, knocked out all 100 coins exactly. The advantage over the standard DD was simply devastating. In general, the opinions of the people are divided here, there are adherents of both mono 9 "and snipers 6". Here, the place of application comes to the first pan, everything depends on it. If the total trash can - then better sniper if medium - better mono 9 inches, it will be much more comfortable on the beach.

Which company to take a sniper rifle for the Terka 705?

If earlier the choice was scarce, now there are many manufacturers who produce coils for all devices in various variations. And there really is plenty to choose from. There are a lot of firms - Minelab, Nel, Mars MD, Detech and others. Everything is simple - you need to "smoke" the forums, collect some statistics, which is used more often and more successfully. So far, no matter how much I "smoked" the forums, the most positive reviews about the coil are Minelabovskaya. Why? Because it was originally developed for the X Terra series and is 100% compatible. As the saying goes - why reinvent the wheel when everything has already been thought out for you?

I climbed the forums, read reviews of diggers on various models, put together useful information, so I spread it, I think the owners of the 705th Minelabs will come in handy.

    Minelab 6DD 18.75

The first katuchen that is highly praised is from Minelab. Among other things, one hundred percent compatibility and ease of use. The small diameter of 6 "allows you to search" short ", very useful, what can I say, a must-have thing for searches on foundations. It allows you to" punch "literally every centimeter of the surface. Just compare the sizes of 6" and 10.5 "coils:

A high frequency is more suitable for finding small things - scales, other small coins, scales. In terms of depth, of course, it loses a little to a regular coil with a frequency of 7.5, but it is not critical. But it allows you to simply knock out some small area. Optimal for "finishing off" the territory after reconnaissance with a conventional coil.

There are many opinions about the advisability of buying this coil, if you run more in the fields, then there is no point in buying. Especially now, during the crisis, when the price tags have jumped 2 times. Recommended only in 3 cases - if you are digging foundations, for an attic search and for searching in trash cans.

Excellent separability of metals, however, low operating speed and shallow depth, is recommended for a leisurely thoughtful search in a small area, which is planned to be knocked out to zero.

Mars Sniper 2-Frequency for X Terra

The novelty of 2015 from "Mars", as for me, is just perfect. This is exactly the development that all treasure hunters have been waiting for. Heaps of coils with different frequencies are no longer needed. This sniper has 2 frequencies at once - 7.5 and 18.75.

The shape is an ellipse, so see for yourself if you need a round or an ellipse. The coil size is 6 * 10 ". For heavily littered areas, most likely it will not work. But it is more universal. You can bomb fields, beaches, even foundations. There are no reviews yet, but I think they will appear very quickly, since the device is really in demand.

    Nel Sharp and Nel Sharpshooter

Two more coils of small diameter, very often used by treasure hunters.

    Nel Sharp 18.75 - 5 "round reel

Sharpshooter (Sniper) - 5.5 * 9.5 "ellipse, frequency to choose from.

In addition to high-frequency, there are also 7.5 kHz. The choice, as they say. Choose by size for your needs, I wrote my IMHO above.

As diggers unsubscribe, who used it, the first thing that surprises is the depth, the Sharpshooter ellipse loses a little standard reel... Decent depth for a small reel is a big plus.

There are a lot of positive reviews, an increased warranty for coils - Sharp 5 years, Sharpshooter 3 years. Reliable (they were at least before). Now the situation on Nel coils is not so rosy, there are a lot of defects. As for me, I would take either Minelabovskaya or Marsovskaya. IMHO.

In addition to the above, there are also snipers Detech, Coiltek. We will make reviews on them a little later, because they are not so in demand.

Today, even a beginner in our hobby knows that sooner or later he will have to purchase an additional coil (s) for his metal detector to increase the productivity of his search. For the search conditions sometimes differ so much that no matter how cool the device is, for effective implementation the narrow tasks of a single coil will obviously not be enough.

    Minelab 9 Inch Mono Coil

    What is important to us?

    Search location

    • Field- it is required to cover large areas in a short time. This works for coils from 12 "in diameter and preferably at least 15". Large coils allow you to increase the speed of the site survey and the depth of detection, as well as avoid missing useful targets.

    Coiltek 15 '' coil

    • Littered area- a place where residential buildings (house spots), foundations of buildings once stood. This also includes attics and basements. The smaller the diameter of the search coil, the less impact on the quality of the search will have undesirable targets (metal garbage). Typically, for such conditions, searchers prefer to use coils with a diameter of up to 9 inches. Many generally consider a diameter of no more than 6 inches to be suitable.

    Coiltek 6 '' coil.

    • Sea beach- salty wet sand. One of the most difficult places to work with a metal detector, salt has an extremely negative effect on the stability of the search equipment. The device simply fades or is flooded in every way from interference. On a salty beach, it is advisable to use small diameter search coils - this makes life much easier. On freshwater beaches, everything is much simpler, you can work with any reels, depending on the number of met. rubbish, but usually no more than 10-11 inches in size.

Minelab 15 "reel versus standard Minelab 10.5" reel.

    What are we looking for?

    • Coins

The overwhelming majority of search engines hunt for coins of the period of the Russian Empire (RI) and treasures of the same period! If the search is carried out in a field, in the place of a plowed (or plowed once) village, then the larger the diameter of the coil, the better, with the exception of areas with a concentration of meth. garbage. A frequency of 7.5 kHz is ideal for operation. For the empire - the very thing.

    • Jewelry and small scale coins

But if the object of your desires is, say, scales or metal-plastic, as well as jewelry, then the requirements for the frequency of the coil are different. Regardless of whether you have a standard coil, sniper or rudder, the frequency is preferable to a high frequency, in our case it is 18.75 kHz. It is important not only to choose the correct diameter of the coil, its type (DoubleD or Concentric (mono), shape (circle or ellipse), but also the frequency.

    • Gold nuggets

When it comes to finding gold nuggets, the most common search for nuggets is in extremely mineralized soils. DoubleD coils are believed to be more resistant to mineralization. But the search for gold is a separate, large topic and now we will not touch on it. Moreover, for such tasks there are devices that are an order of magnitude more productive "Terok".

    NEL Attack 15 '' Coil

Finally, we all have our favorite littered areas.

The simplest rule of thumb for beginners is that if, while searching, you hear signals from multiple targets in one short coil run, then it's time to replace it with a smaller diameter coil. When two or more targets are hit under the coil, the metal detector cannot determine exactly what you have under the coil - the target will be incorrectly identified and, most likely, you missed.

It is precisely for such conditions that snipers exist - small diameter coils, up to 6 inches (although if the coil is ellipsoidal, then it can be, for example, 5.5x9.5 or 10x5 inches). Mono 9 '' (round) coils have also proven themselves very well in trashy areas.

NEL Snake 6.5x3.5 - real sniper

Well, the tiniest thing is mineralization.

As you know, we are looking not in the air, but in the ground, which prevents the passage of the electromagnetic signal. It is clear that the higher the level of mineralization, the worse the signal penetration into the soil, not to mention the decrease in the identification capabilities of the metal detector. How bigger size coils, the more ground it has.

Conclusion: the smaller the diameter of the coil, the less influence the mineralization has on the operation of the device. We are not talking about special devices for gold prospecting right now!

    What is the result?

Snipers, small diameter coils, let it be up to 9 inches, are used to search in places with a large amount of metal debris, as well as in buildings. Standard spools, 10-11 inches, are versatile for most search conditions and with a moderate amount of metal debris.

Large coils, 15 inches or more, - to increase the depth of search, especially when it comes to finding coins, and of treasures too. Very handy when you need to quickly cover a large area. Good for total cleaning of a promising area. But with an increase in the diameter of the coil, the separation rate of closely lying targets deteriorates significantly. In places with a high content of metal debris with "rudders" there is nothing to do. Well, the increased mineralization will not let you get bored.

Ellipse coils are convenient when working in the forest, among roots, bushes, stones and other inconveniences. More stable on mineralized soils. But the detection depth for round coils is somewhat greater.

The high frequency of 18.75 kHz is perfect for searching for small targets, irregular objects (jewelry) and metal products with low conductivity (gold). The low frequencies of the X-Terra - 3 and 7.5 kHz - are intended for finding medium / large targets.

When buying a coil, remember that if you are looking for mainly coins, 7.5 kHz coils are fine. If your main interest is beach hunting or looking for small things like scales and metal-reinforced plastic, take a coil with a high frequency of 18.75 kHz.

Fortunately, today the owners of Minelab metal detectors of the most popular X-Terra series have the opportunity to purchase a two or even three frequency search coil from a well-known and well-established manufacturer - NEL. Also, another well-known manufacturer, MARS, has similar reels for the X-Terra series.

But, as you know, a coil operating at only one frequency will always cost less than a three-frequency one. The choice is yours!

    Good luck in finding.

    Fireworks, Comrades!

Previously, my main metal detector was the Garrett AT PRO, I wrote a lot about it at the very beginning, when I first started my blog. If interested, then the posts about Garik.

Then I sold it and bought myself a Minelab X-Terra 705 with two coils - a 10.5 at 7 kHz standard and a new Minelab-Coiltek 15 ″ at 3 kHz. I have already written a little about them. Naturally, the Terka made a great impression on me, because its functionality turned out to be at a level higher than that of the AT PRO. Unfortunately or fortunately, I don’t know. AT PRO is good, but did not live up to my expectations for its price. The water resistance was also not the best, on the sea beach there is phonite and other disadvantages, which I wrote about in my comparison article.

Naturally, I wanted to see what other improvement options for this device could be. Fortunately, the season was over, some especially expensive finds were sold and it was possible to buy new equipment and improve the technique for searching. How can you improve the device and improve the quality of the search? Naturally, by purchasing a new coil from a third-party manufacturer! I looked at the market - Mars MD is not for sale, but Nel is available. Nela has a lot of coils in the line for different purposes, but I was looking for something for everyday search, so that I could replace the stock one and increase the performance. The choice was small - we had to take a three-frequency, fortunately with the Torka 705 there is such an opportunity, and for everyday search, Nel has a Tornado model, which has a size of 12x13 inches. For everyday searches, this is the most optimal size. So, let's take a closer look at this coil and compare it with what I currently have in stock.

The coil is delivered in a box, which is important - there is less risk of getting it broken and with a bent wire at the connector, etc. Nel provides a 2 year product warranty, but now (as of November 2016) is offering a promotion if you register a reel on their website, then you can get an additional +1 year warranty for the coil .

The kit included a bolt for attaching the coil to the rod and a wire clamp, a useful thing, it helps to remove phantoms, sometimes it happens that the coil reacts to a copper cable, especially when it is not twisted and dangles. In addition to the bolt and the retainer, there are rubber seals, they protect the ears of the coil from excessive friction and, as a result, their breakdowns.

The coil connector for the detector unit is also protected by a rubber cap - a trifle, and will help keep the contacts from possible dampness and corrosion.

What I especially liked - even for the coil there is a small manual and tips on how to use the coil and how to tune the metal detector to quickly get used to the coil. Getting used to it is necessary, because sometimes the familiar signals and VDI values can change slightly and it will take some time to reach "Zen" - the state where you will take maximum finds with your device and a new coil. The very tips for using I scanned too:

Now let's move on to the most important thing. Since the device itself weighs almost a kilogram (together with the cover and the dirt on it during the search), the weight of the coil is very important and every 100 grams will contribute to the fatigue of the search and, in turn, will affect the search performance and its duration. This is especially true if you are digging in the forest and often have to walk several kilometers in order to find a position or a place where there was a fight or a skirmish, for example. Surprisingly, the Tornado turned out to be a little larger than the standard one by 10.5 inches, but also heavier by about 100 grams. Not much, especially considering that the weight of the staff is 596 grams (weight with protection), and the weight of the Tornado is only 670 grams (weight with protection).

As you can see, the difference in weight is only 70 grams. Not too significant a difference considering the difference in coil sizes.

Naturally, my curiosity went further and I wanted to check the weight of the 15 "Minelab bar at 3 kHz. I remember that when I was digging in the same field with him, two hours later my arm began to hurt a little, it is clear that this is a matter of habit, swinging is good for health, but still a good coil from Minelab turned out to weigh almost 1 kg.

909 grams. It is 300 grams heavier than the Tornado model and the standard 10.5 ″ coil.

Now I will use Tornado for my constant detecting, let's see what bonuses the coil update will bring in the new season! Especially considering that I will now look for suitable third-party headphones for searching, because there is a clever way I have how to dig with Deus in ordinary headphones, and the search performance will also grow from using headphones while hunting. More news to come!

Good signals under the hood and if you have something to add or ask - write comments, share the post with your friends on social networks, for me it will be an indicator that you like my posts and it will give me more motivation to write new stories about cops!

IN I'm collecting along the Turk 705, look, there is a lot of useful and interesting!
