Drift: from history to ... theory. And practice! What is drift: definition of the concept, where it occurs

drift

According to the rules of the competition, a car for drifting can only be with rear-wheel drive, but there are examples when a car for drifting is prepared from the original all-wheel drive - Subaru Impreza, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, converting it to rear-wheel drive.

Drift car elements

Engine

As a rule, modified turbocharged engines are used, tuned in such a way that maximum power is developed at high speeds. The loads are very high, so additional improvements are aimed not only at increasing power, but also at increasing resistance to loads and higher temperature conditions. If we talk about Nissan, then most often you can see the SR20DET (4-cylinder, 2-liter in-line turbo engine, which was installed on the Nissan Silvia, 180SX, 200SX S14, S15), RB25DET (6 cylinders in a row, 2.5 liters, turbo, put on Nissan Skyline) and an excellent, high-performance engine from the Skyline GTR - RB26DETT (inline-six, 2.6 liters, twin-turbo), if we are talking about Toyota, then representatives of the legendary JZ series, 1JZ-GTE are more common under the hood of this company's drift cars (a family of cars on the MARK2 / CRESTA / CHASER platform, 2.5 liters, 6 cylinders in a row) and one of the best Japanese engines 2JZ-GTE (3 liters, 6 cylinders, was installed in SUPRA, ARISTO). Less productive, but also popular, are the 3S-GE and 3S-GTE series engines (Altezza, Celica GT-FOUR, Caldina). Often, instead of modifying an existing motor, drifting uses the so-called “swap” (swap) - replacing the engine with a powerful one with great potential for further upgrades.

Suspension

Stiff shortened springs with sports struts or ready-made coilover kits, stiffer and thicker anti-roll bars are used. The camber of the front wheels is set very negative (preferably more than 3 degrees of negative camber), for more precise control of the car in a skid. It would be very useful to strengthen the body with struts. Also, in order to achieve a greater angle in the drift, the steering system is being finalized, increasing the eversion of the wheels.

Tires

Tire damage

Perhaps one of the most important elements of a drift car, as important as the engine, suspension and clutch, or the skill of the driver. Depending on the requirements of the driver and the characteristics of the car, the choice of drift car tires can be very different.

It is generally believed that tires require more grip on the front axle, which often leads pilots to opt for slick and semi-slick sports tires. The rear axle, on the other hand, must slide, and on the other hand also give traction - and here the choice is determined by the power of the car, the preferences of the pilot and / or the method of use. For example, cars with a power of 400 hp. and above require more grip, but in training, pilots prefer to use cheap hard tires that will cling poorly to asphalt, easily slip into a skid and wear out for a long time.

In addition to grip and wear resistance, smoke emitted from under the wheels during a skid plays an important role. After all, the amount of smoke affects the evaluation of the pilot by the judges. Machines with high engine power require tires with a more durable construction, which brings them closer to sports and moves them away from "civilian" models.

The most popular brands and models of tires for drifting:

Half slicks:

  • Toyo Proxes R888
  • Bridgestone Potenza RE01
  • Yokohama Advan A048
  • Falken Azenis RT-215/615

  • Infinity Tires INF-05
  • Kama Euro 129

Basic tricks in drifting

Hand braking drift

Drift using the handbrake. This technique is the simplest and preferred for learning to drift. It is not recommended to start studying other techniques without mastering this technique to the fullest. It is important even for professionals, as it allows you to correct mistakes made during understeer, when other techniques no longer help. The technique is as follows: to cause a skid, you need to depress the clutch pedal, send the rear axle into a skid with a strong jerk of the hand brake, and then release the clutch pedal. It is important to maintain engine speed with the clutch depressed. You need to learn how to choose the speed and force of the handbrake jerk, depending on the situation. It could even be a series of trajectory-correcting jerks. This technique can be learned on a low-power rear-wheel drive car, even without a differential lock. Desirable hydraulic handbrakeif the factory design quickly leads to a break or stretching of the cables.

Clutch Kick

Sharp release of the clutch. By quickly depressing and releasing the clutch pedal while maintaining high engine speeds, there is a short-term excess of power that breaks the rear axle into a skid.

Yorindrift

Sliding with the breakdown of four wheels. All-four-wheel slip braking in a corner when the car completely stalls in the middle of the corner.

Kanteria / feintdrift

Swinging, or "Whip". Skid, with the help of which S-shaped turns (sicans, chicanes) are passed. When a skid in one direction is preparation for a turn in the other. This technique is used in the rally.

Braking Drift

Soulless braking. During this technique, the brake is applied during corner entry and fully released when the apex point is reached, causing the weight of the car to shift, causing the rear wheels to lose traction. The skid is then controlled with the steering wheel and throttle.

dynamic drift

Dynamic drift. It is carried out by a sharp release of gas at the entrance to a long turn, steering adjustments and timely maintenance of the skid by short pressing the brake. It is mainly aimed at professionals due to the high danger of such equipment.

Power over drift

Excess power. This type of drift is used on machines with high power. To enter a power drift, you need to turn the steering wheel in the direction where you want to direct the car, and press the gas all the way. Due to the high engine power, the rear wheels will lose traction. To get out of the turn without damaging the car, you need to release the gas, but not completely, and turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction.

side braking drift

Side sliding. Drift option, when the rear wheels are stalled and the car slides almost sideways.

fast drift

High speed drift. It differs from exemplary drifting in the speed of cornering in a skid and steering adjustments. This technique is acceptable for training and performances on specially oriented tracks. As a rule, during high-speed drifting, steering adjustments are less than during normal drifting, due to which tire life is increased.

Chokudori

Typically used after passing a straight section of road to slow down and make a deep skid. Braking by sliding and setting the car at the right angle relative to the road for the most advantageous passage of the turn itself.

Manji

Performed on a straight road when the driver swings the car from one side of the road to the other. Usually used in drifting demonstrations. Manji is a preparation for many techniques such as chokudori and inertial skidding. Widely used in the UAE.

In the world of motor sports, every year such a direction as “drift” is gaining more and more popularity. Professional motorists love it for the ability to quickly pass turns, and ordinary people - for entertainment. The general public learned about this technique thanks in large part to the movie The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. This and much more will be discussed in this article.

Definition

So what is drift? This term can be found in various fields. For example, in programming there is such a thing as server drift. However, drifting has received the greatest distribution in motorsport. There it is the technique of cornering with the help of a controlled skid, at the highest possible speed. At the same time, drifting is a kind of motor sport in which this technique is the main element. Competitions in this discipline are held on tracks with a large number of turns. As a rule, such tracks are covered with asphalt, but there are also exotic types of coverage, for example, ice. The main goal of the athlete is the most spectacular and technical passage of turns. Speed in drifting competitions fades into the background. In this sport, mainly rear-wheel drive cars are used.

Story

As a sport, drifting in cars originated in Japan. If you believe the legends of motorsport, then its first manifestations were noticed back in the 60s of the last century. Since this discipline developed in several Japanese cities at once, it is impossible to name the exact place of its birth. In the movie Tokyo Drift, the Japanese capital was the center of the drift movement. However, the following cities appear in the history of the initial development of drifting: Irohazaka, Rokkosan, Hakone and Nagano. Like most professional racing, in the early days of its development, drift competitions were held illegally. Races were organized on winding suburban roads with an abundance of turns. Such tracks were called "Toge". Well, the enthusiasts who competed on the "Toga" were called "rolling zoku".

The goal of the racers was to complete the track as quickly as possible - the result of the competition could be determined by milliseconds. Over time, to improve their results, racers began to apply the techniques of rally drivers. With their help, the Rolling Zoku was able to take turns at high speed, without losing momentum. Using the rally technique of cornering, the pilots began to notice that the level of car ownership increased significantly, exactly like the intensity of the race, and the time to complete the track, at the same time, greatly decreased. Gradually, drifting became an independent discipline and eventually completely separated from classic racing.

Drift came to America only in 1996. Many states banned car tuning, intentional tire spinning, and street racing, so drift competitions were immediately held on closed tracks. Now that we know in general terms what drifting is, let's move on to its individual aspects.

drift rules

In sports drifting, there are two types of races: singles and pairs. The winner, as a rule, is determined by the results of several races. In single races, the rider receives a certain number of points for speed, trajectory, drift angle and spectacularity of the race. In paired races, the first participant must pass the estimated section according to the task (as a rule, the main task is to adhere to the most correct trajectory). The second participant in the race should approach the first participant as much as possible when passing turns and carry out synchronous shifts. On the second race, the riders act according to the same rules, but change roles. The winner of the double race is the pilot who showed himself better in the position of "catching up". In the event that the athletes showed almost the same result, the judges may appoint a third run.

Refereeing

Evaluating the performance of the rider, the panel of judges takes into account the following parameters:

  1. The trajectory of the passage of a particular section. The drift track is divided into a certain number of zones, the passage through which is separately evaluated by the judges.
  2. The angle of drift when passing through a certain area. The higher this indicator, the higher it is rated.
  3. Movement speed.
  4. Style and entertainment. Evaluated separately.

If the spectators do not agree with the decision made by the judges, they can protest it. The opinion of the audience is listened to, as the spectacular passage of the track is one of the key aspects of drifting.

drift cars

In a drift car, special attention is paid to the even distribution of torque. Such cars will be lightened and modernized without fail. The main directions for tuning cars for drifting are: boosting the motor, replacing the rear differential, and installing an LSD lock. Models considered to be classic drift cars are: Nissan 240 SX, Toyota Chaser, Nissan 180SX, Nissan Laurel, Mazda RX-7(RX-8), Toyota AE86 and some others.

Mostly rear-wheel drive cars are used, but there are examples when a front-wheel drive car is converted to a rear-wheel drive to participate in a drift competition. And some riders even drive cars with front-wheel drive. In this case, the control technique of the machine changes. Now let's get acquainted with the features of the individual elements of the drift car.

Motor

Sometimes athletes modify the turbocharged engines of their cars, tuning them in such a way that the torque in the range of 3-7 thousand revolutions is distributed as evenly as possible. Masters are also working to increase the resistance of the power plant to increased loads and high temperature conditions. However, more often than not, instead of refining the existing power unit, athletes prefer to replace it with a more powerful engine, with more potential for tuning. Of course, there are cars that are originally equipped with a suitable motor for drifting, but there are not many of them, so most pilots choose one of the two options described above.

Suspension

Drift cars use stiff, short springs with sports struts or coilovers - a single unit of shock absorber and spring, adjustable in height and stiffness. Anti-roll bars are also rigid. The camber of the front wheels of such a car should be very negative, ideally 2.8 degrees. This is necessary for more precise control of the vehicle during a skid. As for the collapse and convergence of the rear wheels, they are reduced to zero. To increase the stability of the body, it is reinforced with struts. To get a larger angle in the skid, the steering system is being finalized by increasing the eversion of the wheels. Another important manipulation is the expansion of the track. The rear and front tracks must be equal, but it is acceptable for the front track to be slightly wider. The Ackermann angle, for more stable behavior of the car during skidding, is reduced to zero.

Tires

It is generally accepted that tires on the front axle of a drift car should have an increased coefficient of grip, so often pilots put sports tires on it with a smooth slick or semi-slick tread. As for the rear axle, on the one hand, it should slide well, and on the other hand, it should give the necessary level of grip. It all depends on the power of the car, the way it is used and the preferences of the pilot. For example, a 400 horsepower car requires good grip, but during training, to save money, pilots can put on it cheap hard tires that cling poorly to the surface, easily skid, and wear out slowly.

In addition to durability and grip, the amount of smoke they emit when cornering in a skid plays an important role in tire selection. The judges' scores and the reaction of the audience directly depend on the amount of smoke. We have already learned what drifting is and how competitions are held on it, it's time to get acquainted with the basic drifting techniques.

Hand braking drift

Before the athlete begins to drive, as in the movie "Tokyo Drift" ("Fast and the Furious"), he will have to work on his skills for several years. First of all, novice pilots learn to glide with the help of a handbrake. This is the simplest and most common technique. To cause a skid, the pilot must depress the clutch pedal and apply the handbrake with a strong jerk. As a result, the rear axle will begin to slide. Then, the clutch pedal must be released so that the car continues to move. At the same time, it is important that the engine speed is kept at the same level before and after depressing the clutch. The main difficulty faced by beginners mastering this technique is to learn how to select the strength and speed of the handbrake jerk in a particular situation. Sometimes a series of short-term jerks is used to correct the trajectory.

Clutch kick

The essence of this technique is to abruptly throw the clutch pedal. By rapidly depressing and releasing the clutch pedal and keeping the engine speed high, there is an excess of power that breaks the rear axle of the car into a skid.

Yorindrift

It is a slip with the breakdown of all wheels. Due to the sharp braking when cornering, all wheels break into a skid.

Kanteria/feint drift

Translated into Russian, this technique is called "buildup" or "whip". It involves the passage of S-shaped turns with the help of a skid. When skidding in one direction, the car prepares to turn in the other. This technique is often used in rallies.

Breaking drift

This technique involves depressing the main brake when entering a turn, followed by simultaneously depressing the clutch and applying the handbrake. The handbrake is released in just a second.

dynamic drift

It is used during the passage of long turns. The essence of the technique is that when entering a turn, the pilot abruptly releases the gas and turns the steering wheel, allowing the car to go into a controlled skid. The position of the car is corrected by steering and short presses on the brake pedal. In view of the high danger, this technique is used mainly by professional racers.

Power over drift

Used on machines with a powerful motor. To enter the skid, the pilot turns the steering wheel in the direction where the car should turn, and depresses the gas pedal all the way. At the same time, thanks to a powerful motor, the rear wheels lose traction with the road surface, and the car goes into a skid. To get out of such a skid without damaging the car, you need to turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction, and loosen the gas.

side braking drift

This variant of drift translates as "side slip". It differs in that after the breakdown of the rear wheels, the car slides almost perpendicular to the road.

Chokudori

This technique is usually used at the end of a straight stretch of road to slow down and enter a turn. Through sliding, braking and setting the car at the required angle for entering the turn occurs.

Manji

It involves rocking the car from side to side on a straight section of the road. Usually this technique is used only in demonstration performances.

"Tokyo Drift" and "GTA"

Naturally, filmmakers and computer game developers could not ignore such a spectacular sport as drifting. One of the most famous films dedicated to drifting - "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift" - was released in 2006. In many ways, it is thanks to this picture that drifting has become a more mass sport. However, "Tokyo Drift" is not the only film dedicated to this topic. In 2008, the Malaysian film "Evolution: Drift in Kuala Lumpur" was released. In addition, on the Internet you can find a lot of lesser-known, including documentaries, films about drifting.

In the world of computer games, this type of motorsport is also popular. Drift competitions can be found in various racing games. In addition, in the famous GTA game, a separate add-on is dedicated to drifting. What do you think it was named after? The answer is quite predictable - in honor of the very film "Tokyo Drift" ("The Fast and the Furious").

Conclusion

Today we learned what drift is. Summarizing the above, we can conclude that drifting originated around the middle of the twentieth century in Japan as a synthesis of racing and rally techniques. The way to quickly overcome turns with the help of a skid is not only effective, but also very spectacular. Therefore, drifting is popular both among representatives of motor sports and among ordinary people. Finally, it is worth noting that you need to drive a car using such techniques on specially equipped tracks so as not to harm yourself and others. And for those who are not confident in their abilities, it is better to start with computer games about drifting.

In 2014, D1 races with the Japanese were held in Russia for the first time. The Grand PrixD1 auto racing is a competition organized in Japan that actually gave rise to drifting as an independent form of auto racing. The fact that the Japanese came to race in Russia suggests that they recognize the high class of domestic drifters.

Well, we are actively gaining momentum in this direction. The article will discuss how to prepare the car for drifting. Many Russian pilots start their racing journey with VAZs, then moving on to more serious vehicles.

Auto drift

Drift can be called the highest degree of pilot skill. It consists in cornering at high speed with a controlled skid.

This sport is so spectacular that motor racing, probably, can no longer be imagined without it.

The number of fans and pilots is growing day by day. This can be explained, in addition to entertainment, by the fact that drifting is a relatively inexpensive sport. The speed characteristics of the car are not so important here. Much more important are other technical components.

The best drift cars

Naturally, the most popular traditionally are the Japanese. These are Nissan and Toyota. Other Japanese automakers are also starting to produce drift cars. This applies to Mazda, Honda, Subaru and even Mitsubishi.

Most of all, drifter pilots around the world love Nissan, namely the following models:

  • "Sylvia" body S and above;
  • "Skyline";
  • "Cefiro A31";
  • "Strength 80";
  • "Laurel".

Many drifting fans are sure that Nissan is the best for drifting.

Arkady Tsaregradtsev about VAZ

The director of the track in the city of Krasnoyarsk and the racer A. Tsaregradtsev believes that every novice driver should know how to drift on a VAZ correctly. It is with this car that he recommends starting his driving journey.

On the "Lada" they come to an understanding of how the car works, where and what affects each other. There is a connection between the road, all elements of the car and the driver himself, who learns to feel his car as himself.

For the winter season, he believes that this is the best car. The combination of weight and power, chassis, readily available parts - all these components are the key to success. You can learn this sport on any Zhiguli.

First drift car

Before you prepare the car for drifting, you need to know all the differences necessary for the competition. And the car has plenty of them. Just having a sports car is not enough. In addition to the drive, rigid body, there are a number of characteristics of a real drift car.

Consider them on the example of the legendary Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86. It was on it that the Japanese drifter in the last century Kunimitsu Takahashi inspired many of his future followers by drifting.

The car came off the assembly line in the early eighties. For drifters, it was made attractive and relatively light weight. Later, of course, it was supplanted by more modern Toyotas, and first of all, Nissans. However, he remained in the hearts of many people as the car that shaped this sport. In the nineties, they shot an anime about a boy who had this Toyota model. It talked in detail about the technical characteristics and behavior of the car on the road.

This is a three-door coupe or hatchback that has blind or regular headlights. The car features a well-balanced chassis, rear disc brakes, LSD and a powerful unit. Many drifters still revere and respect him.

How to prepare your car for drifting: weight

So, let's take a closer look at the main characteristics that should be present on a drift car.

Lightness is one of the most important components of a car. Make it as easy as possible. This will positively affect dynamism, reduce inertia and roll when cornering. Due to the light pressure on the tires, the car is easier to start drifting and maintain there. The engine, body, transmission, glass and more - everything that is possible is subjected to relief.

Weight distribution

In order for the car to be in a skid for as long as possible, the weight distribution along the axes is carried out, which should be approximately the same front and rear. So the car will turn neutral. In this case, it is only necessary to monitor the ratio of skidding and speed, and not to fight with skidding of the rear axle or drifting of the front axle, which usually happens with a weight distribution of different percentages. The battery and gas tank, and sometimes also the radiator and other elements, are transferred to the lighter back.

Rear drive

Another component of how to prepare the car for drifting to get a quality skid is. On a front-wheel drive car, the effect will be achieved solely through the handbrake. All other types are not available. In addition, the transmission and installation of the motor on it is far from what you need. The all-wheel drive version, however, can be made to drift. For example, most of the cars participating in the rally, meanwhile, at almost every turn they deliberately use a skid.

However, real professionals will certainly prefer rear-wheel drive. It is with him that it is possible to fully experience your car on the slide. And, of course, control is greatly increased.

This happens because:

  • the front wheels are used only to control and hold the car in a skid;
  • the rear wheels are used only to control skidding in various ways.

self-locking differential

How to start preparing a car for drifting? Equipped with self-locking differential. With a normal view, it is difficult to make a skid at a large angle, and even more so to keep it. And it is useless to talk about a turn of one hundred and eighty and three hundred and sixty degrees. The fact is that with such an attempt, the outer wheel will be loaded by the turn, and the inner one, on the contrary, will be unloaded. Moreover, the latter can rise above the ground. The motor in this situation will not be able to give torque to the loaded wheel, because it is busy rotating the unloaded one. Therefore, with gas adjustment, it will not work to start skidding. It is possible here only with the help of a hand brake. And then, an uncontrolled turn will come out, but not a drift. But with a self-locking differential, torque will be transmitted in any case.

Tires

Adequate adhesion to the surface must be ensured. However, since it is easier to learn how to drift on a car with more slippery tires, it is possible to use them at low speed, because they simply cannot withstand more. But in competitions, there must be tires that can last at least one race. At the same time, on a more powerful engine, tires must be more tenacious so that the car slides at high speeds and with a fair amount of smoke.

It is used to ensure drift. It shows a minimum of depreciation when changing torque. It will glide much better than a high-profile one.

Other improvements

As for power, then, of course, as in other races, it is needed. At the same time, very spectacular performances are also known on cars of low power. Therefore, preparing a car for drifting can either include work with horses or do without it.

Bushings and salenblocks are of no small importance, which should strive to become as rigid as possible. The collapse of the front wheels is done at a negative angle. Thanks to this, it turns out to make an excellent drift angle. All components of the suspension should serve to obtain the greatest possible rigidity. Springs and shock absorbers are changed, or coilovers are mounted, which have less travel. Also changed to thicker anti-roll bars.

If the question of how to prepare a car for drifting on the technical side has been resolved, they also go to the controls. Here everything should be as convenient as possible for the pilot. Instead of the standard one, the steering wheel is mounted with a smaller diameter, the pedals are brought together and other rearrangements are made for the driver.

In particular, special sports seats are installed that help to better feel your car when sliding and provide optimal lateral support.

From the article, we found out how to prepare a car for drifting. But the machine, no matter what characteristics it may have, remains just a powerless technique, the dynamics in which a person really and in his own way puts. So the final performance is still primarily dependent on him. Well, a car is a friend who will readily share the joy of victory or the bitterness of defeat. It is desirable, of course, both of them - with concomitant repairs.

Drifting is a type of extreme-speed motorsport, which has a lot of fans. It is characterized by the intentional stalling of the rear axle during a turn, its passage in a controlled skid at the highest possible speed. The angle of the rear wheels during drifting exceeds the angle of the front, sometimes significantly. This type of driving speaks of the highest skill of the driver, his ability to control the power of the car and direct it in the right direction.

Story

It all started in the 70s in Japan, it was this country that became the birthplace of drifting as a separate movement. The first drifters are street racers honing their technique on winding roads in the mountains. They used it to pass the track faster, the score was accurate to the millisecond. The key person in the origin of drifting is Kunimitsu Takahashi. This Japanese was originally a motorcycle racer, but later continued his career as a race car driver.

He has many victories in professional sports, including the 1961 German Grand Prix in road racing. An accident forced him to switch to motorsport, after which he began a new path. In automobile competitions, Kunimitsu Takahashi was also successful, even taking part in Formula 1. To date, the Japanese has completed his career, it happened at the age of 47 years.

His driving style gave rise to a whole movement of fans of extreme turns and burnt tires, a new kind of spectacular professional sport was gradually formed.

The second key person in the origin of this riding style is Keiichi Tsuchiya, who later became its king. This Japanese man has gained fans from all over the world, even made a video about his amazing drifting skills. It was thanks to him that the extreme form of racing became legal. In 1999, the D-1 Grand Prix series was created, and to this day remains the world's greatest drifting association.

Cars

There are two main requirements for a drift car: it must be rear-wheel drive, and it must have at least 160 horsepower.

Rear drive

It is he who will ensure the slippage of two rear wheels at the same time.

Maximum lightness

The car should be light and agile, within reason, of course. Without this, victories and successful passages of tracks cannot be achieved.

Engine

Volume matters here. It should work for the longest possible time in hardcore-extreme hard-load conditions. Well, if it is equipped with supercharging.

Suspension

You need strong shock absorbers and stiff springs.

Most often, the brand of a drifter car is Toyota or Nissan, but our domestic Zhiguli are also unexpectedly loved by the public and athletes. The best cars for drifting are: Nissan 180-SX, Nissan Laurel, Toyota AE86 and ().

Varieties

There are many techniques, and sometimes only a professional can distinguish one from another.

Hand-breaking drifting

One of the simplest, despite the intimidating name. Suitable for beginners, first steps in drifting. The main plus is that if you make a mistake, you can correct it with corrective jerks. Fulfillment: the clutch is squeezed out, a powerful jerk of the handbrake is made, the car skids. Then the clutch pedal is released. Hand-breaking drifting will train the extreme driver to control the strength and speed of the jerk.

Clutch-Kick drifting

Clutch is squeezed out and rushes sharply. It is because of this that the car also skids sharply.

Yorin drifting

During this variation, all wheels are stalled at once, which occurs in the middle of a bend in the track.

Kanteria drifting

Rotation is carried out in the form of the letter "S". In Russian, you can call it rocking, a whip. Kanteria drifting looks incredibly impressive.

Braking drifting

This drift technique is characterized by pressing the brake pedal at the very moment of entering the turn. After pressing, squeeze the clutch and turn on the handbrake, but not longer than one second.

dynamic drifting

When entering a long turn, the pilot quickly decelerates, corrects, maintains the skid with the steering wheel and quick depressing the brake pedal. He no longer adds speed.

Heel Toe Shifting

This variation consists in switching speed with the toe and heel. At the same time, it is important to maintain balance, smoothness, correct steering, control over the operation of the brakes. The trick of the technique is that one foot can be on two pedals at once, which ensures smooth gear shifting.

Fact: Drifters not only move straight forward, left and right, but also up and down. Drifting is, last but not least, a show, and drivers must do everything to provide it. Execution: wheel on the inside of the turn, pushing off a barrier or bump on the track. Thus, the weight of the car moves to the other side, skidding begins.

Kansei drifting

An interesting type of drift. The car literally flies into a turn at high speeds, the driver takes his foot off the gas pedal. The weight of the vehicle passes to the front axle, the motorist controls the slip that has appeared with the help of the steering wheel and gas pedal.

long-slide drifting

An important requirement for this technique is high speed. The driver, using the handbrake, completes a long straight slide, which ends with a turn at a large angle.

With this technique, the car is shifted by the rear wheels onto the ground or a muddy shoulder to maintain the slide and enter the track at the required speeds.

Power over drifting

This technique is feasible only on high power vehicles. To enter a skid, the steering wheel turns in the direction in which you want to direct the car. Then the gas is pressed to the end, the rear wheels lose traction. All this is due to the sufficient power of the machine. To get out of the bend of the track without damage and accidents, the gas is not completely released, and the steering wheel is turned in the other direction.

Side-braking drifting

The rear wheel failure causes the drifting car to slide almost sideways.

Chokudori or Swaying drifting

As a rule, this technique is used after flat sections of a straight track. Fulfillment: braking occurs with the help of sliding. The car is set at the required angle, a deep skid occurs. The driver must choose the optimal angle to fit into the turn.

Manji drifting

Rarely seen on a winding track, more often on simple straight lines. Rocking the car all the way back and forth looks spectacular. Often performed for show.

Professional slang

Some words of motorists are very interesting. And very accurately reflect the harsh reality of this sport.

  1. "Homeless drift" - when a car is used for drifting, not intended for it;
  2. "Cut down sideways", "give a corner"
  3. "Fog" - obstruct the view of the enemy with the help of smoke.

Competitions

The competition was not always a duel, before the riders made races one at a time. Over time, the competition came to the format of a pair race, followed by evaluation by the judges with the help of points. In addition to entertainment, boring technical parameters are also evaluated, so a spectacular race does not yet give victory on the track. It must also be done correctly.

There are summer and winter competitions, the rules are almost the same for any time of the year. The track is prepared or curvy to demonstrate the beauty and skill of corner entry. The primary task is to remain unharmed and reach the end. Another is to do it the best.

The competition consists of qualification (first stage) and duels (second stage of pair races). In Japanese, these stages are called Tanso and Tsuiso.

Each pilot has three attempts to qualify. The first one is not taken into account with a short track, this is a “warm-up”. On a long track, all three are scored. All drivers are at the beginning of the track in equal conditions - each has 100 points. Each mistake results in points being deducted.

Criteria for evaluation

Technical parameters in competitions are as important as spectacular performance, and sometimes even more important for some judges.

The first important criterion. Judges evaluate the trajectory. Usually it is determined before the race by the judges themselves, and each driver must follow it clearly.

The second criterion to be evaluated. The angle of movement of the vehicle relative to the trajectory is estimated.

The third mandatory criterion. Speed - as in all races. The higher, the better!

The fourth mandatory criterion. Spectacle and individual style. This is appreciated not only by harsh impartial judges, who are hard to surprise with something, but also by the audience. Within the framework of the criterion, even the beauty of the smoke from under the wheels is evaluated. This criterion is defining and most important for many drifters, it inspires them to new achievements and victories on the track.

Personalities and their words

Kirill (Kaluga Drift Team) Izotov: « Why drift? I enjoy it».

Alexander (Red Bull Team) Grinchuk: " I love that burnt rubber smell. The state of a controlled skid - I lose my head from it. And I love and know how to win!»

Ekaterina (Ural Drift League) Shabarina: « Drift makes me happy».

Artur (OMNI) Yanabaev: " I love raising the bar. Drifting for me is an incomparable pleasure.».

Evgeniy (ToySport Drift Team) Satyukov: « Yes, I just love it!»

V. Pustoshny: " Drifting is from the category of collecting dead insects, growing cucumbers, gambling - to each his own».

1. Many people confuse drifting with power sliding or simply with uncontrolled skidding. This is a stupid mistake. For power sliding, the engine power is not important, and even the type of car. So do not stick the “Drift King” sticker on an old one, even if you managed to accelerate on it and enter a turn.

2. There are many computer and mobile games dedicated specifically to drifting, such as CarX Drift Racing.

3. "Tokyo Drift" - one of the films about this type of motorsport.

4. If during the competition, not a single judge saw a single mistake in the execution technique, the chief of them says: “Anikuya to yourself!”, Everyone around them repeats in unison and joyfully.

5. A particularly cool drift is considered to be a light touch of the rear bumper on the barrier, this is called the romantic expression "Kiss the wall".

6. It's easy to kill two tires while drifting in less than five minutes. Drifter weekends are fun, but they cost five or more sets of tires.

7. There are specialized tires for drifting - the smoke from it comes out with a bright color or even a smell.

8. The pilot pulls the handbrake at speeds reaching 120 km per hour.

9. The handbrake is often upgraded and modified in every possible way, made longer, since this is the main tool.

10. The engines of the most powerful drift cars have up to 700 horsepower.

A drift is a controlled skid of a car. In sliding, the smell of burnt tires and the sound of danger, many find drive, a way out of routine days. The goal of a drifter is to regulate speed by car in such a way as to reduce the grip of some wheels with the roadway and at the same time maintain an unmarked trajectory. There are many individual tricks and drifting techniques. The newcomer is usually shown how to learn to drift live, with an instructor.

The best place for training will be a specially equipped and prepared track.

Surface.

To perform the maneuver at the very beginning of training, the surface of ice or pressed snow is ideal. The wheels roll well on it. Spectacular drift shows are often held in large cities. Masters prefer to perform the most complex techniques on wet asphalt.

Do not rush to perform complex maneuvers at the beginning of training.

What car to drift.

The most convenient way to drift on the rear wheel drive. Desirable powerful engine and low landing. Check that the wheels are at exactly 90 degrees to the ground. The rear springs were stiffer than the front ones. The hardest rubber without treads is what we need in our case. Also lock the rear differential of the transmission for better rear wheel lift.

Video tutorial - How to learn to drift:

Basic drifting techniques

  1. Drift with Handbrake (E-Brake/Handbrake)
It is quite possible both on the back and on front wheel drive. Basic take. Acceleration is taken, and then the handbrake is used. The sharper the better. Everything takes less than one second. The handbrake puts the block on the wheels (front or rear). The latter break into a drift. All skill is expressed in the graceful balancing of the steering wheel. Sometimes the gas pedal helps. The steering wheel must be turned in the direction of movement and periodically taxied, then control over the slip will be achievable.
  2. Dirt Drift)
More difficult option. To achieve the desired effect, the rear wheels of the car are installed outside the roadway, the roadside. Then they take acceleration and sharply enter the turn, keeping the balance and moving through the dirt or primer.
  3. Drift with braking
Acceleration is carried out, and then a clear braking right a few seconds before entering the turn. The rear wheels lose some of their traction by transferring all the weight of the metal to the front axle. The steering wheel and gas pedal become the only assistants in balancing the slip that has arisen.
  4. Drift with hesitation
Slow technique. The rear axle of the car gradually swings about the axis of its movement, resembling a swing, at low speed.
  5. Throwing clutch
When the iron horse is already sliding or just entering the planned turn, a sharp release of the clutch is made. A reciprocal power surge is a reasonable consequence of such actions, leading to a drift of the rear of the car.
  6. Gas release
Speed characteristics should be on top. Slip occurs due to increased load on the front axle. When entering a turn, they stop accelerating at all. The weight of the car is redistributed, it begins to noticeably drift, that is, to slide. The car is controlled quite easily, control over the steering wheel and gas is practically not lost.
  7. Too much power
A drift that many experienced unintentionally. Just entering the turn, they squeezed the gas pedal too hard, resulting in a skid.

The only advice that will definitely help in mastering the art of side riding is to do everything calmly and without sudden movements.

Other types of sliding by car are also distinguished among professionals: false, in a jump and others. One thing's for sure: once you've tasted drifting, you'll never be the same person again.
