The finalists of the 2018 FIFA World Cup have been decided, and among them there is no England team. Prince William was a fan of the national team (and several relatives even joined His Highness) throughout the championship and especially on July 11, in the semi-final match, but the British could not beat the Croats.
William has been the president of the Football Association of England since 2006 and before the start of the semi-final match, he hastened to support the players with an encouraging video on Twitter.
“Guys, good luck tonight. We are very worried. You surprised throughout the tournament. I wish you all the best today,” His Highness said. At the end, William uttered lines from the Three Lions song, the unofficial anthem of the English fans: “It's coming home. Come on England!”.
The composition was recorded by The Lightning Seeds in 1996 for the European Football Championship, which was held in England. And the line “It's coming home”, in particular, indicates that England is the birthplace of football (although not all historians agree with this). On July 7, the Three Lions song performed by the royal guard orchestra sounded at the walls of Buckingham Palace.
Prince William does not have his own social media account, but during the World Cup he posted several tweets signed W on the official Kensington Palace account in support of the England footballers.
It all started on July 3 with congratulations after winning the match against Colombia in the 1/8 finals. “I couldn't be more proud of @england's penalty win! ( the match ended with the victory of the English in a series of free kicks 4:3 ─ approx. ed.) You have earned a great and honest place in the top eight # worldcup and you should know that everyone will be with you on Saturday! Forward, England!” the prince reacted emotionally.
The next tweet came on July 7, after England's quarter-final victory over Sweden. “You wanted to make @england history and you just made it. It was an incredible match and we enjoyed every minute. You deserve this moment!” the prince wrote, adding the famous line from the Three Lions, “Football’s Coming Home!”.
On July 11, after the end of an unsuccessful match for the British (2: 1 ─ victory for Croatia), William hastened to express support. “I know how disappointed @england must be feeling right now, but I couldn't be more proud of this team, you should hold your head up high. You hosted an incredible World Cup, made history and gave us fans confidence. We know @england you are capable of more,” reads the post, captioned W, on Kensington Palace’s official Twitter.
Yesterday, April 27, at the stadium "Vicente Calderon" during the semi-final of the Champions League was, as always, a full house. Places of honor in the ranks of the fans were taken by King Philip VI of Spain and his 10-year-old daughter Princess Leonor. They were rooting, of course, for Atlético Madrid. To the delight of His Highness, the Spanish club won, leaving behind the German Bayern.
