We make a homemade moped ourselves. How to make a homemade moped from a bicycle? How to make a powerful homemade moped

A moped, like a bicycle, is a very convenient vehicle. Moreover, it drives faster than its older brother, thanks to the built-in drive. The ability to move quickly without much effort - isn't that every cyclist's dream? It is quite possible to bring it to life - to equip your bike with a gasoline engine or an electric motor.

A assembled moped from a bicycle is a fairly common phenomenon in rural areas or regional towns. It is there that they like to apply innovative ideas in practice, in particular, to make a smart and economical transport out of an ordinary old one. Have you noticed a similar interest in yourself? Then it's time to get down to business!

Option 1: how to quickly assemble a moped with a gasoline engine

Before you start creating a new moped from a bicycle, you need:

  • bike;
  • gasoline engine and gas tank;
  • battery;
  • pulleys or gears;
  • transfer belt or chain;
  • drive cable;
  • fastening clamps.

Recommended power - 2 HP with., and the volume of the engine should not exceed 50 cubic meters. see. A weaker engine will not allow you to move the bike; you will have to turn the pedals for a while. An engine of sufficient power can be taken from an old moped. Other options are with a chainsaw or lawn mower.

The working unit of the engine, the gas tank and the battery are securely fixed to the frame with the fastening clamps. Convenient location:

  • on the upper tube - battery;
  • the joint of the lower front and seatpost tubes - the engine;
  • next to the engine is a gasoline tank.

The next step is to make pulleys - special transmission units through which the engine power will be transmitted to the rear wheel. The starting material for the pulleys can be small wheels with external barriers, about the size of a CD. Prerequisites are the strength of the material and reliable fastening.

Installing pulleys with your own hands on a bike:

  1. The front gear wheel is attached to the motor shaft.
  2. A second pulley is attached to the hub of the rear wheel of the bicycle.
  3. A belt is put on the pulleys. The tension force is approximately the same as that of the chain. The belt must hold firmly to the wheels, it depends on how exactly the engine will transmit the force to the wheel.

If a chain is used instead of pulleys, gears are placed on the motor and wheel.

So, the transmission is ready, now we turn to connecting the engine:

  1. The working motor housing is connected to the battery.
  2. Assemble the "ignition" mechanism: an ordinary brake lever is attached to the steering wheel, then through a cable it is connected to the engine body.
  3. Set the tension so that the motor starts freely through the handle.

Option 2: collecting a moped with a gasoline engine

This is an advanced method, and the result is more like a real moped. To make it, we need:

  • gasoline engine;
  • moped parts: wheels, shock absorbers, exhaust pipe, brakes;
  • proven bike frame;
  • instruments.

Since here we are going to get a real moped, the frame must have increased strength and weight. Also, on mopeds, the frame design is slightly different, which may cause it to be slightly altered.

Wheels from a moped are put on the frame. The fork will need to be redesigned as the width of the wheels will be wider than the distance between the dropouts. Install shock absorbers on the fork if possible.

Carefully sort out the power unit of the moped and replace all defective parts. The propulsion system will require a separate space, for this a welded metal platform at the bottom of the frame would be a good option. The engine and fuel tank are secured to the site with metal fasteners. It is better to place the battery closer to the steering wheel. An exhaust pipe is connected to the bottom of the engine. The pipe must be firmly fixed to the frame so that it does not dangle while driving.

  1. Remove the pedals and chainring from the bike frame.
  2. Install sprockets on the rear wheel from the moped and the engine shaft. A star on a wheel with a larger diameter.
  3. Slide the rear wheel onto the frame.
  4. Use a chain to connect the stars.

Motor connection. The clutch and throttle are connected to the ignition lever via drive cables. The tension is selected so that the engine can start immediately and start spinning the wheel.

Brakes. If only one brake can be enough for a bicycle (say, the front one), then here it is better to play it safe and install them on both wheels. The rear can be used as the main, and the front as an auxiliary, to adjust the speed.

In general, a homemade bike-based moped will look like this:

Converted bike

Since a vehicle equipped with an engine moves faster than a regular bicycle (for this, a redesign is thought), for safety reasons, it is necessary to put lighting devices on it. Personal protective equipment - helmet, knee pads and special shoes.

How to make an electric bike

If you have no desire to fool around with a gasoline engine, there is another option - to put an electric motor. It can be purchased or installed from another device. The first option for creating electric mopeds is preferable, since the required power is already provided in the engines.

Installation options - a motor-wheel and an independent engine on a chain or belt drive.

The motor-wheel differs from the usual one by the presence of a drive mechanism in the central part. With the help of wires, it is connected to the control unit. A significant advantage is the ability to make the bike front-wheel drive without making any changes to the classic transmission. And if you wish, you can generally put two motor wheels. Installation is easy enough, provided the bike itself allows it. However, a bike with such wheels can hardly be attributed to a moped.

Wheel motor kit

An electric moped is a completely different matter, that is, an analogue of the one discussed above. Of course, there will be no need for an exhaust pipe - this is a plus both in terms of reliability and overall weight.

Assembling an engine from scratch at home will be problematic, so we will consider how to put a ready-made shaft-motor.

Progress:

  1. Install a new sprocket and a belt pulley on the carriage axle.
  2. A shaft with a drive pulley is attached to the seat tube.
  3. The pulleys are connected by a belt.
  4. Through wires, the shaft is connected to a power source.
  5. Pull the wires from the battery to the steering wheel switch.

The location of the battery is on the lower front tube of the frame or the trunk. Electric motor operation diagram:

  1. When the electric motor is turned on, the rotating roller engages the rear wheel cover, pushing it.
  2. The pulleys and the front sprocket transmit torque to the transmission.
  3. A gear change will cause a change in output torque. In this case, the speed of rotation of the roller is kept constant.

DIY electric bike:

Additionally, you can connect the second shaft to the front wheel by connecting it to the driven pulley of the main gear.

The engine allows you to reach the optimum speed faster and maintain it for longer. A bike-based moped is a budget option to own a faster and more powerful vehicle. The transformation of a bicycle into a moped in most cases does not make irreversible changes to the design, so it is possible to return everything to its place.

A motorcycle from a chainsaw with your own hands is a way out for those men who do not want to spend money on a car and its subsequent maintenance and who do not like to pedal a bicycle. In this case, an excellent way out of the situation will be a moped from a chainsaw and a bicycle, which you can assemble with your own hands in the garage by purchasing some necessary, missing parts and spare parts. The alteration process itself is not particularly difficult.

Before starting the assembly or if you have any questions, you can always refer to the drawings and numerous video reviews available on the Internet.

The principle of a homemade moped from a chainsaw

As a basis for a future moped, you can choose an old bike that you want to breathe new life into. You will also need a chainsaw to install the motor on your bike. This way, you get a bike that you can upgrade: repaint, set wider wheels, change handlebars and do other procedures that will make your homemade bike more like a motorcycle.

Choosing a chainsaw for a bike

The most important factor by which you need to choose a chainsaw for assembling a moped is the power of the power unit. The most suitable power is 2 horsepower, as less power will not be enough to get the bike moving. The volume of the engine should be no more than 50 cm3. Experienced homemade moped drivers also recommend choosing engines from old mopeds or lawn mowers.

What does it take to make a moped from a chainsaw and a bike?

For the most part, converting a bicycle into a moped with your own hands by attaching a motor from a chainsaw to it does not require the special skills of a locksmith or engineer. If you are new to this business, then numerous drawings of a moped from a chainsaw, as well as educational video reviews, will help you. Also, not every man in the garage has everything he needs to make a motorbike from a chainsaw with his own hands. Therefore, before assembling, it is recommended to study the list of necessary parts, fasteners and spare parts and buy the missing items.

In specialty stores, you can find whole kits, which include a ready-to-install engine, fasteners and other parts that are necessary to transform a bike into a moped. This kit will greatly facilitate the process of assembling a motorcycle, since there is no need to select an engine of suitable power, fasteners, battery, transmission belt, cable, etc.

Speaking of tools, you will really need all the popular types of components of an auto mechanic's kit: screwdrivers, pliers, keys, wire cutters, etc.

Assembly instructions and drawings of a homemade moped

First, we will first analyze the simplest and most affordable option on how to make a moped from a chainsaw from the photo above. When assembling, the question often arises of how to put a motor from a chainsaw on a bicycle. It is important that it is securely attached and does not move while riding. For this type of homemade motorcycle, you need to secure the following parts with clamps in certain places:

  • the battery is installed on the upper pipe;
  • the bike motor itself from the chainsaw is attached at the intersection of the lower front and seat tubes;
  • fuel tank - near the engine.

The next step in the rework is to create and install the pulleys on the bike. They are needed so that the operation of the engine provokes the rotation of the rear wheel. As a rule, wheels with an external barrier are used for pulleys, which are about the size of CDs.

When choosing wheels, take into account the strength and reliability of both the material itself and the fasteners. To install the pulleys, the front wheel is attached to the motor shaft, and the second pulley is attached to the rear wheel hub. Next, you need to slide the belt over the pulleys. Sometimes men use a chain instead of a belt. In this case, the pulleys are replaced with a chain, and the principle of its installation is no different.

The only thing left is the connection of the motor. First, the motor is connected to the battery, and then the ignition is assembled. To do this, you need to install the brake lever on the steering wheel and connect it with a cable to the engine.

If we talk about a more complex version, then as a result you will get a homemade vehicle, most similar to a real motorcycle. The main differences from the previous design are in a more reliable and durable frame, wider wheels that can be removed from the old moped, the presence of shock absorption and the installation of the engine from the chainsaw.

The most convenient place for the engine will be a separate platform welded at the bottom of the frame. The fuel tank can also be placed there. An exhaust pipe is also attached to the engine. As for the battery, the owners of homemade mopeds recommend placing it closer to the steering wheel. The next step will also be the transmission and engine connection. All the nuances of how to correctly make a motorcycle from a chainsaw with your own hands you can watch in the video.

Many users insist to pay attention to how the belt holds on the wheels. The degree of its fixation affects the transfer of power from the engine, and, consequently, the driving process. The chain is a more reliable and durable part, but do not forget that when using a chain on a homemade moped, gears are used instead of pulleys.

The engine that you took out of the chainsaw must be fully functional. Otherwise, spend a little more time building your moped with your own hands and go over the engine. Try to fix the broken parts or replace them with new ones altogether.

Needless to say, a motorbike is a popular transport. Among his fans there are people of any age - from young to old ...

Among his fans there are people of all ages - from young to old. Compactness, lightness, unpretentiousness - these qualities are appreciated by their owners, especially fishermen, hunters, tourists. And the quite affordable price largely determines the attractiveness of this type of motorcycle for young people.

Moped (dismembered along the swing axis): 1 - D-6 engine, 2 - muffler, 3 - pendulum fork, 4 - rear wheel mudguard bracket, 5 - shock absorbers, 6 - frame, 7 - steering column.

Rear pendulum fork with a sub-frame: 1 - a fork from a moped "Riga-16", 2 - a stiffener with a section of 40x4 mm, 3 - a silencer mounting bracket, 4 - a sub-frame (pipe with a diameter of 28 mm), 5 - suspension bushing of a pendulum fork ( pipe with a diameter of 22 mm), 6 - rear wing mounting plate, 7 - shock absorber mounting eye.

Frame: 1 - steering column bushing, 2 - pipe Ø 32 mm, 3.9 - pipes Ø 22 mm, 4 - trunk (pipe or bar with a diameter of 16 mm), 5 - cross member of the seat (plate 128X40X6 mm), 6 - eyelet rear shock absorbers mountings, 7 - rear swinging fork suspension eyelet (40X40X6 mm), 8 - gusset plate with a hole for mounting the leg support,

Fuel tank mounting scheme: 1 - bracket, 2 - fuel tank, 3 - clamping bar, 4 - M6 bolt, 5 - rack (25X20X XZ mm), 6 - M6 nut, 7 - support platform, 8 - frame.

Brake pedal: 1 - bushing, 2 - lever, 3 - additional bracket-insert, 4 - support platform.

However, despite a sufficient number of brands of light mopeds produced by the domestic industry, only one front wheel is sprung. And if when driving on asphalt roads this does not cause inconvenience, then on a country road the lack of shock absorption of the rear wheel becomes a noticeable disadvantage. That is why we came up with the idea to make a moped with suspension of both wheels, which was realized by the efforts of the design circle at the training and production plant in the city of Kansk. The main design feature of our moped is the use of an articulated docking of two main elements: a frame and a rear pendulum fork with a sub-motor bracket. Thanks to this scheme, despite the shock absorption of the rear wheel, the latter is rigidly connected to the engine, and the drive chain does not experience dynamic loads. Moreover, the shoulder from the swing axis to the wheel axis is much larger than to the engine, therefore, the vibrations of the power plant are insignificant. The frame of the moped is welded from half-inch and one-inch water pipes. (Of course, you can use thinner tubes - for example, from bicycle frames - this will significantly lighten the structure. Unfortunately, we did not have such an opportunity.) The steering column bushing from the Riga-16 moped is welded to the front of the frame. From him and the eyes of the shock absorbers. At the rear of the frame, a trunk is installed, which simultaneously serves as an additional handle for moving the moped. From the bottom to the frame there are welded lugs for attaching the rear suspension and kerchiefs for the footboard from the M-105 motorcycle (it is permissible to use any others). The pendulum fork is taken from the "Riga-16" moped, but has been significantly modified. First of all, in the front part of the fork, in the place of its previous suspension, a spacer sleeve is welded in - a piece of pipe with an inner diameter of 16 mm. The axle of the fork suspension has 0 10 mm, therefore, bronze bushings are pressed onto it on both sides. The sub-frame made of an 8/4 "water pipe is welded to the cross member of the fork and reinforced from below with a stiffener made of steel sheet 4 mm thick. A bracket for the muffler is attached to the latter, but it should be welded after installing the engine. As a result, the entire power plant was assembled on the pendulum fork. together with the transmission. The result is a kind of block - a motor-wheel, which favorably differs from the drive scheme of mass-produced mopeds. The engine is used the most common, brand D-6, with electrical equipment. Headlight, fuel tank, shock absorbers - from the moped "Riga-16", seat - from "Verkhovyna". The rear wheel brake is a shoe brake with a cable drive from the foot pedal. The latter is borrowed from the Minsk motorcycle, but modified as shown in the figure. The end of the brake cable is secured with a specially made lug. The engine is still starting from the "pusher", but in the future we plan to install an additional pedal drive.

Homemade moped

In the environment of modern life, most people have their own personal transport. Bicycle and moped are the most popular means of transportation. Many people buy a regular bike at first, and then convert it into a moped.

Such a device allows you to move faster without the use of additional effort. Assembling a moped is not difficult, and assembly is especially common in rural areas and small towns.

How to make a moped from a bike with a gasoline engine?

Before creating a moped, you need the following tools:

  1. Ready bike.
  2. Motor and gas tank.
  3. Gears, pulleys.
  4. Battery.
  5. Small rope, tight belt or strong chain.
  6. Clamps for fasteners.

Step-by-step instruction

The engine, gas can and battery must be firmly attached to the frame. To do this, use clamps.

For the correct location, the following places are used:

  • a battery is placed on the upper pipe;
  • the engine is located at the junction of the pipes;
  • the gasoline tank is placed next to the engine.

After that, it is necessary to process the pulleys. They are components that help the engine move through the wheel. Small wheels with barriers can be used as a starting material for the pulley. The main condition is durable material with good fastening.

How to install the pulleys:

  1. The transfer wheel from the front must be attached to the motor shaft.
  2. The second pulley is placed on the rear wheel hub.
  3. The pulleys are wrapped in belts. The tension force remains the same as that of the chain. The ability of the engine to transmit force depends on how tightly the belt holds.

If a chain is used instead of a belt, then it is recommended to install gears instead of a pulley.

After completing the above steps, connect the motor:

  • Connect the motor housing to the battery.
  • Connect the ignition mechanism. To do this, there must be a brake lever on the steering wheel, which is carried with a cable to the engine body.
  • Tension adjustment so that the motor starts without additional effort.

How to make a moped from a bicycle with a gas engine?

Required materials and tools

This design is a more advanced and modern design option. After assembly, the moped will fully correspond to these models.

Instruments:

  1. Gas engine.
  2. Some parts of the moped. For example, exhaust pipe, shock absorber, wheels.
  3. Sturdy bike frame.
  4. Welding machine.

Step-by-step instruction

The first step is to prepare the frame. If you can't find a real moped frame, you need to take care of strengthening the one that is. This can be done using a welding machine and a pipe.

Cover the structure with a pipe and weld it, thus connecting the seat and the steering wheel. Not only can a structure be strengthened with a pipe, metal sticks are also suitable for this.

Pay attention to the serviceability of the engine. Otherwise, it is necessary to exclude all defective elements and replace them.

It may not be possible to assemble a moped the first time, but this does not mean that you can take bad elements and parts. The power plant needs a separate place; for this, a welded platform, which is located at the bottom of the frame, is suitable.

An engine and a gasoline tank are attached to it using metal parts. Experts recommend placing the battery next to the steering wheel and mounting an exhaust pipe near the engine.

The next step is to create torque. The first step is to remove the pedals and chainring. Sprockets are placed on the rear wheel. Then the wheel is placed on the frame and the stars are connected with a chain.

The next step is to install the engine and motor. For this, the stage of connecting the clutch with the ignition department is performed using a cable. In order for the motor to work properly, the tension force must be correctly selected. After the power unit is connected, the moped is considered ready.

Since the engine provides a high speed of movement, it will not be superfluous to install lighting devices. This is important when entering the road so that other drivers can see the moped from afar. The driver, in turn, must use protective clothing: a helmet, knee pads, and special shoes.

How to make an electric bike?

Installing an electric motor reduces problems that may arise during the installation process. The electric motor in working order can be removed from other structures, or purchased.

It is advisable to buy an element, since old engines may have other power ratings that are not suitable for the design.

The installation of an electric drive can include several options: the use of the required number of motor-wheels with an engine in a different gear.

The wheel motor is characterized by the presence of a drive mechanism in the center of the element. With the help of wires, the wheel is attached to the control system. The advantage of this design is that the transmission does not tolerate major changes.

If possible, some people install multiple motor wheels. Installation does not take much time, provided the bike can be mounted. The only drawback is the weak similarity of the design with a moped.

No exhaust pipe is required to assemble a real electric moped. This increases the reliability of the structure.

Assembling the engine yourself is still quite problematic, so it is better to install a ready-made motor.

Build rules:

  1. A new sprocket and a pulley are installed on the carriage axis for transmission using a belt.
  2. There is a pipe under the seat to which a shaft with a pulley is attached.
  3. The pulleys are fastened with a belt.
  4. The shaft is connected to the main power supply through special wires.
  5. From the battery, the wires are led directly to the steering part.
  6. The battery is usually located either on the trunk or on the downtubes.

The procedure for the operation of the electric motor consists in the following techniques:

  • Once turned on, the rotation roller clings to the wheel cover, thereby pushing it into action.
  • Pulleys transmit torque together with a sprocket. Thus, the transmission is included in the work.
  • Due to the gear change, the torque is changed, but the roller rotation speed remains at the same level.

Reviews

I have perfected my bike by adding two battery-powered headlights, rearview mirrors. Added a pump, a glove compartment for various things, a spring seat. These seemingly little things have greatly transformed the look of the bike, making it special and more relevant. I have been using the design for more than 6 years and am very satisfied. In the future, I also want to add an electric motor.

Sergey

I have transformed my bike with an electric motor. I thought for a long time between him and the gasoline option. The choice fell in the direction of electricity, since it is more profitable to ride on such structures and they are more reliable. I managed to make everything on the first try and have been using transport for several years.

We demonstrate the scheme for building a moped.

The goal was to create a cross between a motorcycle and a moped, while the moped should be attractive and very small. And since it was made for a specific person, it simplified the overall task of ergonomics. The main task was to build the frame and assemble all the details. The frame was made from a 15x15 square. The castor is 25 ° for comfort on a winding road.

The engine was taken from the SICH chainsaw, earlier this engine was on go-kart in the Pioneer N. class.The motor was modified, the crankcase was cut off at the cylinder landing, thereby the cylinder was lowered, the combustion chamber became smaller, the pressure in the cylinder increased. The rear wheel is a Bridgestone YDS slick, the tank came from the Karpaty moped. From there, the front fork was taken, only it had to be shortened. They did the sitting themselves, nothing is fixed in the photo, because they tried to look at the layout, as they try on a suit in the atelier. The layout was a success, and this could not but rejoice. Had to replace the front wheel with an R10 from some kind of disc brake scooter. Since at a speed of 40 km / h, the moped began to throw, due to the flat surface of the front wheel, the replacement was the right decision, which made it possible to confidently accelerate it to 85 km / h, the gear ratio no longer allowed. But this is fixable, knowledgeable people will understand that for the pioneer 85 this is not a ceiling. That was enough for a start. The question of brakes was sharply raised, they demanded special attention. Due to the fact that the mass of the entire moped with a pilot is about 100 kg, it was decided to take disc brakes from the bicycle to the rear wheel and hydraulics to the front. The brake hose also had to be shortened.

The rear hub was made of 2 parts: one of them is AlMg6, and the second is steel 35, due to the lack of symmetry of the disc from the go-kart, the hubs differ greatly in length and weight. As a result of the action of the moment of gyroscopic forces with a shoulder of 50 mm, it is more difficult to tilt the moped to the left side than to the right, but this was discovered several months later, since the difference is not significant, the wheel rotates on a shaft with a diameter of 22 mm.

Over time, fairings and mirrors appeared. Fiberglass was laid on top of the polyurethane foam and filled with epoxy resin, then the roughness was leveled with a putty. A muffler can be distinguished as a separate topic, it consists of two parts, despite its small size, it has a resonator chamber and is made by calculation, depending on the pressure, exhaust gas volume and temperature. The second chamber consists of partitions and is the muffler itself. It does not lock the engine and does not run quietly. In order to remove the ringing, I had to put on a cover for the muffler, it was made from an oil bottle, since it has a thin body. With such success it was possible to stick any jar that the first one came to hand, then they put it. The wall thickness of the main pipe is 1mm, so the muffler cools down quickly.

Difficulties arose with the light, since there is no generator, and the battery does not last long. This concludes our upgrades. Since you need to know the edge and be able to tell yourself stop in tuning.

In general, the goal was achieved, given the small stature and young age of the pilot, he is quite comfortable and even safe. In any case, no worse than a scooter. It's nice to go, catch the surprised looks of passers-by and drivers. About the cost of such a toy, I can only say that it was possible to buy 2 scooters, but I generally keep quiet about fuel consumption. It was one of our first homemade products. Not everything worked out right away, after a while the rear suspension appeared. But that's another story, and when it ends, I can't say yet, the assembled model is already running, though with a 125 CC engine and a semi-automatic gearbox. It's too early to talk about the results, but I promise to post a sequel.
