USD 1.7 million to compete at VTB Kremlin Cup 2017

This weekend, October 14, 2017, at the sports complex Olympic(Moscow) starts already twenty-eighth in a row. The tournament kicks off Saturday morning with qualifying matches in the women's and men's singles. The final matches will take place a week later - on Saturday, October 21, the winners of the women's competition will be determined, and the next day, October 22, the men's.

This year's prize pool provided by the bank VTB, has become a little more than last year. So, men will compete for USD 823'600 (in 2016 - USD 792'645), and women - USD 855'308 (USD 758'788). The winner of the men's singles category will be able to claim 132'990 USD, and the women's singles - 147'500 USD. In comparison, the winners of the world's major tennis tournaments earn more - by Wimbledon 2017 they received 2.2 million GBR each, for US Open 2017- USD 3.7 million each, for Australian Open 2017- USD 2.7 million each, and for Roland Garros 2017- 2.1 million EUR each.

At the moment, the names of 19 men and 20 women out of 28 who will take part in the tournament are known VTB Kremlin Tennis Cup 2017 however the composition may still change. So, literally today, due to an injury, the Englishwoman Johanna Konta (9th in the world ranking), who was the second racket of the tournament, decided to refuse to participate in the cup, and now the participation of Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova (8th in the world) is under threat for the same reason. By the way, it was Kuznetsova who won the tournament. VTB Kremlin Tennis Cup the last two times.

As a result, it turns out that the first racket of the tournament this year will be the Frenchwoman Christina Mladenovic, who occupies the thirteenth place in the world ranking. Russia this year will be represented by Elena Vesnina (19), Anastasia Pavlyuchenko (21), Daria Kasatkina (29), Ekaterina Makarova (33) and Natalia Vikhlyantseva (69) and others. In addition, Maria Sharapova, who is now playing at a tournament in China, may be at the tournament.

Among men, the main "star" will be last year's tournament winner VTB Kremlin Tennis Cup Spaniard Pablo Coreño-Busta, who is now 11th in the ranking of the strongest tennis players in the world. Thus, the men's part of the competition will also be held without representatives of the TOP-10. However, the organizers are trying to come to an agreement with the Czech Tomas Berdych, who was consistently in the top ten this decade, and this year, after a series of setbacks, dropped to 20th place. As for the Russians, this year Andrei Rublev (35), Karen Khachanov (40), Daniil Medvedev (64) and Andrei Kuznetsov (97) and others will compete for the victory. By the way, the last time Mikhail Youzhny won a home tournament was back in 2009.

Attended VTB Kremlin Tennis Cup and stars of the first magnitude. So, in 2002, at the dawn of his career, one of the best tennis players in the world of recent times, the Swiss Roger Federer, took part in the tournament. Of course, there were more celebrities among women - first of all, all the strongest Russian tennis players, as well as Serena Williams, Martina Hingis, Monica Seles, Mary Pierce, Victoria Azarenka, Carolina Wozniacki, Simona Halep. This is due to the fact that the women's tournament VTB Kremlin Tennis Cup has a slightly higher status than male, which allows tennis players to earn additional points to their rating.

The cheapest tickets for VTB Kremlin Tennis Cup 2017 will cost the visitor 150-975 rubles, depending on the location of the seats. This is how much the pass to the tournament will cost when buying four or more tickets for the qualifying games. A single ticket for the same matches will cost from 200 to 1'300 rubles. Attendance at the final matches will be the most expensive - in the Family package (from 4 tickets) a pass will cost 575-7'500 rubles, and for a single ticket you will need to pay 700-10'000 rubles.

Maria Sharapova left the Kremlin Cup Tennis Cup early, losing in the first round to Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia, but she was not the only Russian woman to start in the tournament, and fans continue to count on their own.

Young Daria, who reached the semifinals of the competition, performs very impressively. In the first round, the 20-year-old tennis player met with her compatriot, and if the first set was held in an equal fight and ended in a tie-break, then in the second game Kasatkina defeated her opponent with a score of 6: 1.

In the second round, the Russian woman met with the representative of the Czech Republic Katerina Sinyakova and quite easily beat her opponent in two sets (6: 2, 6: 3).

Kasatkina played reliably, made almost half the number of unforced mistakes and played much better than her opponent at the reception, winning 36 points.

In the quarterfinals Kasatkina defeated the Belarusian Alexandra, again without losing a single set.

Despite the confident score (6: 4, 6: 3), the match turned out to be difficult and abounded with a large number of mistakes in the performance of both tennis players.

The rivals did not strive to play as actively as possible, but preferred to act more carefully, which did not bring much success to both athletes.

As a result, the victory was celebrated by the one who made the least mistake, and the Russian woman became her. Sasnovich, by the way, won five games on Kasatkina's serve, but that didn't save her either, since Daria was able to make as many as seven breaks - one more in each set.

The Russian woman explained the reasons for the not too confident game in a post-match interview.

“I think I started the match very well, and during the first set I showed a fairly high level of play.

Then, when the score was 5: 1, when I lost my serve, I felt that I was "screwed up" - and the score became 5: 4 in my favor. Then my opponent served, but she made a double mistake on the first ball, and it let me go. In general, the match was really tense, like every fight with Sasha, "- Kasatkina is quoted by gotennis.ru.

Kasatkina's not too confident play in the quarterfinals does not yet allow her to be classified as one of the 100% favorites of the tournament, however, if she shows tennis, with which she won in the first two matches, then the future rivals of the rising star of Russian tennis will have a very hard time.

In the semifinals, Kasatkina will face the Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu, who is in 56th place in the WTA rating - one line higher.

The second remaining in the ranks of the Russian woman in a difficult match beat the Frenchwoman Alize Korne with a score of 4: 6 7: 5 6: 3. The meeting lasted just over three hours. Vikhlyantseva lost the first set to her opponent, but was able to turn the tide of the fight and won the next two games. In the semifinals, the Russian woman will meet with the representative of Germany, Julia Georges.

The loudest event at the Kremlin Cup was the victory of the Russian Daniil A over the first racket of the tournament, the Spaniard Pablo Carreño-Busta, who is ninth in the championship race and 11th in the ATP ranking. Thus, last year's winner dropped out of the competition in the second round.

The meeting, surprisingly, ended quickly - in just one hour and ten minutes with a score of 6: 3 6: 3.

Medvedev made four breaks in the match, losing only one game on his serve.

Carreno-Busta played extremely unsuccessfully - he made 33 unforced mistakes, and with his active actions he won only 10 rallies. Medvedev, in addition to more reliable play on the back line, served well, having performed eight aces, although he made four double faults.

Bosnian will be Medvedev's rival in quarterfinal match

Once again, the "Kremlin Cup" presented residents and guests of the capital with a magnificent billiards party. Competitions this year brought together 308 strongest athletes from 25 countries of the world, who fought in the best traditions of the sport, beloved by many.

"VTB Kremlin Cup" ended with victories of Görges and Jumhur, records for attendance and the arrival of Maria Sharapova.

The main event of the tennis autumn was remembered by the audience primarily by the arrival of Maria Sharapova, who attended the Moscow tournament for the first time in 10 years, the performances of the legendary drummer Chris Slade and hot tennis battles and much more, but first things first.

The Sharapova phenomenon

The last time Maria played in the tournament was in 2007, when she lost to Belarusian Victoria Azarenka in the second round, so her arrival was so long-awaited for the Russian public that literally immediately after the official announcement, tickets for Sharapova's match were completely sold out, media representatives cut off their phones in the hope of exclusive interview. Maria herself was cold-blooded and aimed only at fighting. The fairy tale, which started so well, turned out to be not with a happy ending - Maria spent less than two hours on the court, but she clearly demonstrated how the arrival of stars of this magnitude increases interest not only in the event, but also in the sport in general. This is evidenced by the full stands throughout all subsequent days of the tournament.

“The support was great, the stadium was full. I didn't know what to expect, but I really wanted to play in my homeland and knew that the whole country was rooting for me for the last two years. I wanted to perform well - it didn’t work out, but I think that I will still have the opportunity ”- commented Sharapova at the post-match press conference.

Triumphants

The winner in the women's singles category was the representative of Germany, Julia Görges. Thanks to the triumph in Moscow, the athlete interrupted the series of offensive defeats that followed her in the finals and won such an important victory for herself.

The finalist of the tournament was Daria Kasatkina, despite the defeat, she was satisfied with the result and separately noted the special support of the fans:

“There was a full stadium. I think that it should be so, if not from the first day, then at least from the quarterfinals. It's really great: you go out on the court and you feel the atmosphere. People are interested, they come to get sick, ”Kasatkina commented.

Damir Cumhur from Bosnia and Herzegovina became the winner in the men's singles after a bitter struggle, he defeated Ricardas Berankis from Lithuania, for whom it was the second final of the ATP level in his career 6: 2, 1: 6, 6: 4 in 1 hour 39 minutes. It is noteworthy that Jumhur won his first title a month earlier in St. Petersburg.

“I don’t know why I perform so well in Russia - maybe the air is special here. (Laughs.) I just like to play in Russia ”- Damir Jumhur shared his impressions immediately after the victory.

The women's doubles were won by tennis players Andrea Glavachkova from the Czech Republic and Timea Babos from Hungary, in the men's doubles - Belarusian Maxim Mirny and Austrian Philip Oswald. For one of the most titled doubles players in the world - Maxim Mirny - this victory was the fiftieth at the ATP tournaments.

“I consider this tournament to be my home tournament: unfortunately, I do not have an ATP tournament at home in Minsk, so this is the most dear and close tournament for me. I have a lot of family members, friends - and therefore I always want to play my best. It is not always successful, but when it succeeds, it is always pleasant ”- the tournament press service quotes Mirny as saying.

Among the Russians, 21-year-old Daniil Medvedev showed an excellent result, who played in the quarterfinals for the second year in a row, and in the second round knocked out the winner of the 2016 VTB Kremlin Cup, Top-10 player, Pablo Carreño Busta. Natalia Vikhlyantseva on her way outplayed her strongest rivals - Vesnina and Korne, and in the semifinals she lost to the current champion of the tournament. Evgeny Donskoy and Andrey Kuznetsov reached the stage of 1/2 men's doubles.

Attendance records

According to preliminary estimates, the VTB Kremlin Cup was visited by more than 77,100 people this year, which is almost 10,000 more than last year.

Of these, more than 7,000 people took advantage of a special campaign organized by the organizers and VTB Bank, visiting the first days of the event free of charge using Muscovite social cards, student ID cards, VTB plastic cards, Post Bank and electronic invitations.

Ticket sales increased by 52% and, according to the Chairman of the Board of Directors Shamil Tarpishchev, the positive dynamics will continue in the future:

“Of course, the tournament was successful. Despite the absence of the Russians in the men's final, the stands were almost overcrowded. This year the tournament broke the attendance record. Most of all I liked the fact that they began to go to the game itself, and not only to “ours”, as was usually the case. Since last year, the situation has changed somewhat and people go to tennis, "Tarpischev said.

Special events

The official press conference dedicated to the start of the VTB Kremlin Cup tournament was held in the very center of Moscow, in the new Zaryadye park. Representatives of the media, directors of the Moscow competitions and specially invited guests gathered on the territory of the Reserve Embassy. The event was the first in the park since its opening.

A pleasant surprise for tennis fans was the autograph session of Svetlana Kuznetsova and Anastasia Myskina at the end of the event. Everyone could get an autographed photo of tennis players as a souvenir and parting words.

For the first time, the draw for the tournament was held in an interactive format on the basis of the press center of the TASS news agency, all those present could watch its results in real time.

Not only tennis, not only hard court!

For the fourth year in a row, the Moscow competitions were held under special stage lighting, which created a unique atmosphere of intimacy on the courts and arena. During the tournament, entertainment zones, quizzes and children's contests were organized, autograph sessions were held for tennis players: Anastasia Sevastova, Philip Kolshreiber, Coco Vandevey, Elena Vesnina, Alexander Bublik and, of course, Maria Sharapova at the stand of VTB's title partner.

The Moscow tournament will also be remembered by many enchanting shows of ex-AD / DC drummer Chris Slade, who performed on the final days of the tournament. Chris is a unique musician who, during his career, managed to collaborate with Neil Peart just two weeks after joining Rush, playing with Tom Jones, Gary Newman, Olivia Newton-John (in the Tomorrow group). He performed with AC / DC at the 1991 Monsters In Rock historical festival in Moscow.

Social program

An important social component of the tournament was the charitable action "Supporting Children and Families in Difficult Life Situations", organized jointly with the fund of the Central Federal District. Thanks to this initiative, 238 children from orphanages and boarding schools attended the tournament. Little guests watched the matches with interest, took part in interactive zones, took pictures with the stars.
