Summer Universiade 2017 Guide

This competition has its own anthem, mascot and slogan, but there will be no Russian athletes.

Where and when

From 19 to 30 August in Taipei city. Brasilia and Turkish Izmir argued for the right to host the competition. Taiwan is the only country among the applicants where the Universiade has not been held before. In Brazil, student games were held in 1963, and Turkey hosted athletes in 2005. Taipei's application was approved by the International University Sports Federation on November 29, 2011.

For the capital of the Republic of China, these competitions will generally become the largest and most significant sporting event in the entire history of the island state. All tickets for the Opening Ceremony, which will take place on August 19, were sold out a month ago.

Kinds of sports

For a week and a half, athletes will compete for 275 sets of awards in 22 sports. In addition to the fourteen compulsory events that are presented at each Summer Universiade, eight more were added by the organizing committee. Six of these have previously been held at student games: archery, badminton, baseball, golf, taekwondo, and weightlifting. Wushu and roller sports will make their debut at the Universiades this year.

Athletics will traditionally compete for the most awards - 50 sets of medals, in swimming, athletes will compete for 42 sets, in taekwondo - for 23 sets.

Symbolism

For the logo of the Universiade, a Chinese character was chosen, which means "north" and is an abbreviation of Taipei. The design lines reflect the city's ongoing commitment to excellence and innovation. The obligatory element in the logo is five stars, which, like the Olympic rings, represent the five continents.

The official slogan of the competition is “For you. For young people".

The Universiade also has its own mascot - a black bear named Bravo. He was chosen as the mascot via online voting. The white stripes on the chest are in the shape of a V, which means victory. Also, this letter is the ribbon for the gold medal of the bear.

Universiade

The Universiade has its own hymn... The lyrics for the song Embrace the World with You were written by renowned Chinese singer Chris Wu. In addition to national motives, the composition uses the rumba rhythm. The song is about friendship and world peace.

Russian team

The University Sports Federation has set a plan for this Universiade of 40 gold medals. Famous and titled athletes, winners and prize-winners of the world championships and the Olympic Games will be involved in this task. So for our team will be divers Ilya Zakharov and Evgeny Kuznetsov, archer Tuyana Dashidozhieva, weightlifter Artem Okulov and others.

Athletics representatives will not be able to perform at the Universiade. The Russian Student Union was unable to register athletes to participate in the games.

“Our athletes will not perform at the Universiade in any status, so nothing happened. It was planned that 11 people will go there, but we have not received any clarification from the International University Sports Federation on the topic of how neutral athletes will participate in the competition. It was not clear how to enter them into the database, "Sergei Seyranov, president of the Russian Sports Student Union, told TASS.

Where to see

The World Summer Universiade can be viewed on our website and on the Match! Arena". The opening ceremony will take place on 19 August at 14:00.

Athletes from all over the world will meet at state-of-the-art sports arenas from 19 to 30 August. So if you want to brighten up the last days of summer - don't miss the live streams from Taipei!

Taipei had to withstand serious competition. After all, his competitors were the capital of Brazil and Turkish Izmit. Both applicants had impressive experience in international competitions, including university games. The fact that Taiwan is a partially recognized state also played a negative role in Taipei; many countries consider it an integral part of mainland China.

Championship sports facilities

It offers students from all over the world the most state-of-the-art arenas. All of them were either recently erected or built specifically for the competition. Here is a list of newly built indoor spaces that are ready to host athletes:

  • Taipei dome(Taipei Dome);
  • Taipei Tennis Center(Taipei Tennis Center);
  • Taipei Basketball Gymnasium(Taipei Basketball University);
  • Taipei arena(Taipei Arena).

The emblem of the youth championship is five multi-colored petals that soar upward in a single dance. According to the organizers, such a composition symbolizes the "striving for perfection".

The mascot will be a black and gray bear with a gold medal around his neck. The triumphantly raised paws of the "clubfoot" will have to "motivate athletes to dedication and strive for excellence." The competition also has a slogan: "For you - For youth".

The rest of the disciplines were included in the sports program by the organizing committee of the host country. Their final list can be seen on the official website of the World Summer Universiade 2017. In the meantime, seven sports have been tentatively agreed upon:

  1. archery.

  3. golf.
  4. badminton.
  5. baseball.
  6. roller sport.

If weightlifting has returned to competitive practice, then wushu and rollerball sports will be featured for the first time at university games.

Who will be the leader of the 2017 Summer Universiade medal standings

The Taiwanese national team lacks stars from the sky, so you can hardly expect a victorious sprint from the athletes of the host country. In previous draws, the top three were distributed as follows:

Gwangju (South Korea), 2015:

  • South Korea;
  • Russia;
  • China.

Kazan (Russia), 2013:

  • Russia;
  • China;
  • Japan.

Shenzhen (China), 2011:

  • China;
  • Russia;
  • South Korea.

Belgrade (Serbia), 2009:

  • Russia;
  • China;
  • South Korea.

Bangkok (Thailand), 2007:

  • China;
  • Russia;
  • Ukraine.

Izmir (Turkey), 2005:

  • Russia;
  • China;
  • Japan.

Daegu (South Korea), 2003:

  • China;
  • Russia;
  • South Korea.

Beijing (China), 2001:

  • China;
  • Russia.

As you can see from the list, the leaders are three countries: Russia, China and South Korea. Therefore, they are likely to be the leaders in the final table of the 2017 Summer Universiade. However, politics can intervene in sports once again. There has already been a precedent when, in response to the sharp attacks of the Taiwan government, officials from the Middle Kingdom threatened to boycott the university games. Let's hope that political discord will pass the upcoming Universiade!

Afterword

So, you now know when the tournament will take place, how many competitive disciplines the fans will see and who claims to win in the unofficial standings. So buy tickets or even offer yourself as a volunteer. Fortunately, the registration of volunteers for the Universiade continues to this day. Well, for those fans who do not have the opportunity to attend competitions in Taiwan with their own hands, there will always be sports channels that will broadcast around the clock television broadcasts!
